Berkley Coffee Beanery's Fate Uncertain

Unexpected, non-life-threatening health problems, compounded by financial challenges related to the still-soft market, force owner Dan Cleary to close the popular shop.

The Coffee Beanery in Berkley recently closed its doors and it is unclear if they will reopen.

Unexpected, non-life-threatening health problems in his family, compounded by financial challenges related to the still-soft market, forced owner Dan Cleary to shut the business March 13, he said.

"I love our client base; it's family. The best part of business was the community and the customer base," Cleary said Tuesday. "But, I've got to put health first right now."

Cleary said he has no imminent plans to reopen the popular gathering place, but is looking for alternatives with his landlord and the Coffee Beanery.

"We're taking it day by day," he said of business operations. "The fat lady is singing low, but I never say never anymore."
