Whiz Kid Takes Her Place in the Spotlight

The Burton Elementary School third-grader, who was cast in a Birmingham Community House production of "Grease," says being in a play has been her lifelong dream.

School: Burton Elementary School Grade: Third Age: 8 Accomplishment: Ellie Haenick recently was cast in the Birmingham Community House production of Grease, which will be performed by local youth actors at the Birmingham Community House on Nov. 5 and 6. If you ask Ellie how long she's wanted to be in a “real play” she will tell you it's been her lifelong dream. At 8 years old, she's ready to take the stage and triumphantly make her dreams come true. For Ellie, all the world's a stage anyway. Her mother, Amy Haenick, said “the entire city of Huntington Woods knows she's in a play. She is beyond excited.” Ellie is comfortable performing in front of anyone, Haenick said. She has done Broadway Bound at the Huntington Woods Recreation Center …

Berkley Says Willkommen to These Whiz Kids

German choir takes stage at Anderson Middle School and Berkley High School during recent visit.

Ages: 15-18 Hometown: Schwerin, Germany Accomplishments: The German choir group Jugendchor des Musikgymnasiums Schwerin was invited from Shwerin, Germany, to perform during a two-week tour of Michigan schools. First performing in Wyandotte, then Kalamazoo, the group joined with host families in Berkley on Sunday and performed at Anderson Middle School on Monday and Berkley High School on Tuesday. The choir arrived from Kalamazoo on Sunday, all smiles and ready for Berkley. Students from Jugendchor des Musikgymnasiums in Schwerin, Germany, piled out of a large bus at noon and lined up their suitcases, ready to meet their host families. Kidz Klez Band of Michigan Has a Whiz in Its Midst

Viola player Ari Dubrinsky is involved in Huntington Woods Teen Council, Environmental Advisory Committee.

Ari Dubrinsky School: Norup International School Hometown: Huntington Woods Accomplishments: Ari performed with the Kidz Klez Band of Michigan on Monday during the Ford Arts, Beats & Eats festival in Royal Oak. It was the second consecutive year the band showcased Klezmer music, a tradition that parallels Hasidic and Ashkenazic Judaism, during the Labor Day weekend event. Besides participating in Kidz Klez, Ari is involved in Huntington Woods Teen Council, "which she loves," mom Karen Dubrinsky said. "She enjoys volunteering and had a great time at the Teeniors Bingo, which pairs teens and senior citizens for a game night at the Rec Center," Dubrinsky said. School begins Tuesday and we can't wait to hear what youngsters in our communities are achieving.

Do you know a whiz kid? You know, one who goes out of the way to help others, who has a friendly smile or is setting a good example? Youths in Berkley, Huntington Woods and Oak Park are doing great things and, with school beginning Tuesday, there will be new opportunities for them to shine. Whether it's a good deed or an athletic or academic achievement, we want to hear about the whiz kids who grace our community. Whiz Kid Strums up Praise

After attending years of lessons and Rock 'N' Roll Band Camp, this teen plays with a group and continues to impress the staff of Berkley Music Co. with his guitar skills.

School: Entering sophomore year at Berkley High School Accomplishment: Eric Kozlowski said he and other staff members at Berkley Music Co. have taken notice as Tommy Porter of Oak Park has continued to take lessons and participate in the music shop's events. "We have watched him progress greatly in his music over the years, and he continues to impress us," Kozlowski said. Tommy also has attended the Rock 'N' Roll Band Camp for the past four years. Tommy, 15, always has been into music, he said. He has been playing guitar since the fourth grade and has been singing in a choir since fifth grade. Whiz Kid Honored For Serving Community

Huntington Woods Teen Council leader and Virginia Jones Spirit Award winner found creative ways to bring generations together.

School: Berkley High School Accomplishments: Rachel received the Virginia Jones Spirit Award at the Huntington Woods Fourth of July celebration for her work on the Huntington Woods Teen Council. She also recently was elected by her peers to lead the council during the upcoming school year as council coordinator, Huntington Woods Recreation Center recreation program coordinator Tracy Shanley said. Rachel was an easy choice for the Virginia Jones Spirit award, Shanley said. The civic award was named for a Huntington Woods resident who made a huge impact on the community in the mid-70s. UPDATED: Whiz Kid Gives Hugs, Love to Haitian Children

When offered an opportunity to help the impoverished nation, Berkley High School grad said, "I just knew I had to do this."

Sarah Dooley School: Recent graduate of Berkley High School Accomplishment: Sarah Dooley of Berkley joined the Mission of Hope from Kensington Community Church in Troy April 2-9 on a trip to Haiti to help rebuild the devastated the nation and its capital, Port-au-Prince, after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck in 2010. The group of high-schoolers was in charge of some light construction work and children's activities at the Mission of Hope facility in a nearby village. Dooley said when she heard of the mission to help the children of Haiti, she was instantly on board. She estimated that 25-50 high-schoolers from Michigan joined her on the spring break trip that took them to the impoverished nation still devastated after the Jan. 12, 2010, …

Whiz Kids: Scholarship Winners 'Ideal Berkley Bears'

Berkley High School recognizes two students during Honors Convocation.

Age: Seniors School: Berkley High School Accomplishments: Shannon Farlow and Kieffer Donnelly were awarded  $800 in Berkley High School Staff and District Scholarships on May 23 during the Honors Convocation. The fund has awarded $8,000 in scholarships since 2006, when it was created by two Berkley High School teachers to recognize stand-out seniors. Earlier in the year, Uncle Andy's Pizza donated 20 percent of its pizza sales to the scholarship fund. Social studies teacher and scholarship board member Angie Church said there were many amazing students honored during the Honors Convocation, so Shannon and Kieffer were among good company during the event. Whiz Kids: Preschoolers to Run for Charity

Laps for Leukemia will raise funds for toy closet at Beaumont Hospital's pediatric oncology center.

ACCOMPLISHMENT: After going through treatments for acute lymphocyctic leukemia, preschool alumnus Ben inspired others to give back and run Laps for Leukemia, an event that raises money to fill the toy closet at Beaumont Hospital's Pediatric Hematology and Oncology department. During the May 26 event, the preschoolers will attempt to run two laps around the school. Each lap is .16 miles. Two weeks before they run their laps, the group of preschoolers sat cross-legged in front of the May calendar. On it, Huntington Woods Christian Preschool's director Barb Fishman put a little tennis shoe on May 26 to mark the day of the event. The kids counted out the number of days in anticipation as teacher Lynne Gerfen pulled a few beverages off a snack …
