One resident says the work in Huntington Woods has led to a barrage of lost home health care professionals, delivery people and visitors circling misleading detours.
Now approaching the two-month mark, construction to repave the northbound lane of Coolidge in Huntington Woods is nothing new around town. In fact, the blazing orange signs, cones dotting the lanes and stop-and-go traffic in that area might be familiar and mundane now. It certainly is for longtime Huntington Woods resident Julie Hazan, especially after she saw the road being repaved the first time around, starting in 2001. But for her, she says this time is different and much more difficult – not necessarily for people like her who have spent their entire lives in the city, but everyone else. “I’ve seen construction projects use very creative ways of informing the people (of detours). This is not one of them,” she said. Since the project …

Huntington Woods officials will meet with the city's attorney later this month to determine a new plan of action in the five-year court battle against Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment, Inc.
Now in the fifth year of the legal battle with engineering firm Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment, Inc., the City of Huntington Woods received a setback this month from the Michigan Court of Appeals. On May 10, the court’s decision was announced to reverse the jury’s previous verdict in the favor of the city and against OHM. The jury's decision had awarded the city nearly $700,000 for professional negligence after the city complained about the deterioration of a road OHM had recently paved. City Manager Alex Allie said Monday afternoon that the city will decide on its next steps in June. “We have not yet met with our attorney, but I assume we will appeal it,” he said, adding that more information will become clear after the June 19 City …

Crews are close to finishing underground utility work, storm lines and water mains.
It was another successful week of work for the Coolidge Highway construction crew in Huntington Woods, project manager Larry Harworth said Tuesday. “It will only be four weeks on Thursday that we started,” he said. “So we have come a long way in a short time.” Harworth said crews working on the northbound side of the road are about to complete the underground utility work from Lincoln to 10 Mile in a week and a week and a half. That work includes finishing the storm lines and installing the new water mains. Once the underground utility work is done on that stretch of road, Harworth said they will begin the road building phase, which includes digging out the old road, replacing it with stone, adding new water drain structures and then …

After last week’s rain delays, a week of mostly clear skies has put the five-month road project ahead of schedule.
Three weeks into the construction work on northbound Coolidge in Huntington Woods and much of the underground work is already finished. Project Manager Larry Harworth said the storm lines have been replaced and the new water main and all the new water mains along the side streets from 11 Mile to Lincoln should be done by Wednesday. “At this point, we are ahead of schedule a little bit,” Harworth said. “Things are going smoothly and complaints aren’t real high, so as of now we are doing well.” Progress of he work has been helped because of a week without much rain, which allows crews to work longer. On Thursday, crews will start to build the road from 11 Mile by digging out the old road and prepping it for concrete, he said. Many of the …

Weather Friday and Monday morning 'rained out' the Coolidge construction workers, the Huntington Woods project manager said.
Despite rain days and awry traffic, the construction project to repave Coolidge Highway remains significantly on track, according to its project manager. “We got rained out Friday. It was too wet, and we actually got rained out (Monday) morning, but overall, things are on schedule,” Larry Harworth explained. Pipes for the water mains are being set and the previous concrete has been milled away, he said, and the Huntington Woods road is still expected to reopen by mid-September. One issue Harworth has seen with the road being broken up is that drivers are still attempting to travel north on Coolidge. He explained that with two-thirds of the road gone, just the turn lane and southbound lane are available as the project works to repave the …

Here’s your weekly update on the Huntington Woods road work under way until September.
Construction work to repave the northbound lane of Coolidge Highway in Huntington Woods is two weeks in and moving steadily at this point. Despite the delay in beginning the project, Huntington Woods City Manager Alex Allie said the lane is totally closed off now and the construction is in the demolition phase. “They got all the asphalt off of it and now the concrete is coming out,” he explained. So far, the work has been nearly all underground and most recently, the water main was delivered. “The gas line is already completed, the water mains will be put in then, and the storm sewer has been completed,” Allie added. The project is expected to be completed by mid-September and detour routes have been established for northbound motorists …

While I've seen pretty good compliance, some people need to be reminded that all the north-south routes in HW are 25 MPH zones. There are lots of kids and pets about. The detours are frustrating, but for pete's sake, slow down.   more ›
