Bites Nearby: Amici's Gourmet Pizza To-Go Opens in Birmingham

Customers can pick up pies, salads and sandwiches or have them delivered.

Amici’s Pizza & Living Room, a Berkley favorite known for its fresh gourmet pies and hip martini lounge, has added a location in Birmingham. Owners Jennifer Stark and Maureen McNamara opened Amici’s Gourmet Pizza To-Go on May 16.  The new restaurant has the same menu, fresh ingredients, friendly service and even the same type of oven, driven all the way from Florida. The biggest difference is an added convenience for customers. The Birmingham location is a take-out or delivery location only, with extended hours for lunchtime patrons. The Berkley location is only open for dinner. “Our idea (for a to-go store) is a concept, a first try of many,” McNamara said. Stark added that Birmingham was an ideal location because it is an underserved …

Bites Nearby: cup.cake

Royal Oak bakery serves sweet treats including cupcakes, cookies and macaroons.

Walking into cup.cake, I was greeted by owner and self-proclaimed frosting maker Eva Watt. Her passion for yummy baked goods is evident. She lights up talking about cupcakes, macaroons, cookies, muffins and even awesome, locally roasted Chazzano coffee. But you're not going to cup.cake for coffee. You want unadulterated sweetness. Cupcakes. Macaroons. Cookies. Let's start with the namesake. Of the five cupcakes sampled, the blueberry lemon stood out. Sweet, plump blueberries set in a delicate lemon cupcake. Tart and sweet balance each other well. Sometimes cupcakes suffer from being too sweet – this was not a problem with the lemon blueberry. Other notable winners: Orange and carrot cake, cup.cake's most popular flavor, according to Watt. …

Bites Nearby: Rust Belt Market

"Handmade" extends to food at Ferndale marketplace open only on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Rust Belt Market has been open for about a month now. Basically, it is a place for purveyors of handmade and/or vintage goods to set up shop and sell to the public each Saturday and Sunday. As its website says, "Ever wish that Etsy existed offline? So did we."  Etsy, of course, is an online marketplace where people can buy handmade and vintage goods from around the world. The fundamental problem with Etsy is you have no idea who you're buying from. No matter how dolled up a virtual storefront may be, it is still virtual. Rust Belt Market brings the sellers from behind the keyboard into a public space where buyers can discuss any issues they may have before purchasing an item. When we talk about handmade goods, foods are sometimes …

Bites Nearby: Commonwealth

Breakfast and lunch spot in Birmingham focuses on locally sourced ingredients.

It's easy to get bored with diners, coffeeshops and coney islands. How many times can you eat a ham and cheese omelette or a bacon cheeseburger and be completely satisfied? Don't even get me started on the acridness that is diner coffee with its overly acidic lack of flavor. It isn't totally fair to lump Commonwealth in with these places, but that's only because Commonwealth is so unique. Places like Commonwealth are few and far between. Open from 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m. every day of the week, it is possible to have high quality coffee and made-to-order food focused on locally sourced ingredients almost any time of day.   Coffee options change fairly often (sometimes daily, in fact).  Commonwealth's website (gocommonwealth.com) is updated with …

Bites Nearby: Amici's Pizza & Living Room

The green-certified Berkley establishment serves not only pizza but also a full line of martinis and other libations.

There is something especially satisfying about Amici's.  Not only is the pizza interesting and somewhat healthful, but Amici's was one of the first local restaurants to "go green." "In 2007, Amici’s Pizzeria was awarded the Certified Green Restaurant mark from the national nonprofit Green Restaurant Association. The GRA was founded in 1990, and its program is the national standard for Certified Green Restaurants," Amici's website says. Not many places in Metro Detroit can claim that distinction.   For those trying to live a healthful lifestyle, Amici's uses organic products whenever possible. Vegan and vegetarian pizzas are available with soy cheese and with gluten-free crusts. The gluten-free crust costs a little more than traditional or …

Bites Nearby: Ernie's Pizza Cafe

Home of the stuffed pizza in Royal Oak also serves a full Eastern European menu.

Ernie's Pizza Cafe is one of the more unique establishments in Royal Oak. First and foremost, it has pizza – thin crust or stuffed. Stuffed pizza is somewhere between a calzone, a sandwich and a slice of pizza. Spicy pepperoni, mozzarella cheese and house-made tomato sauce are the filling between two layers of pizza dough.    In addition to pizza, owner Anatoliy Dubovitskiy serves Eastern European dishes. Most are only available if you call ahead. However, that could mean calling 30 minutes in advance, so we suggest you just call and ask if they have any Eastern European dishes available that day.   Ernie's is open late on the weekends because stuffed pizza is an ideal food for post-bar noshing.   Recommended dishes: Stuffed pizza, …

For nearly 40 years, Julian Bros. Bakery has been providing Clawson and its surrounding areas with delicious baked goods, breads, pizza, subs and more.   When talking to the employees and customers, it becomes obvious that this place is beloved.  Asking for a recommendation is difficult. Looking for a quick dinner option? Bites Nearby: Mr. Kabob

This Middle Eastern restaurant will change your perception about where quality cuisine can be prepared.

Mr. Kabob is no longer a hidden gem. Mention the name and the response is almost always, "Oh, that place in a gas station?"   It is true that Mr. Kabob is located in the Sunoco at 12 Mile and Coolidge in Berkley, but that should not diminish expectations. The shop serves serious Middle Eastern cuisine that is flavorful, fresh and affordable. The Gulli family started Mr. Kabob Mediterranean Cuisine in 2003 next to the family’s gas station and it has since grown into a franchise business. While dining in is an option, most food is taken to go. Remember, even if the food is exceptional, the restaurant is still in a gas station, which doesn't provide much ambience. All food is served in Styrofoam takeout containers. Disposable plates and …

Bites Nearby: Forest Grill

At this Birmingham restaurant, the focus is rustic fine dining.

"Cooking what nature provides" is Forest Grill's motto. James Beard award nominee Chef David Gilbert elegantly creates rustic, impeccably prepared dishes.  Focusing primarily on seasonal, local and sustainable foods, Forest Grill's menu remains accessible and a joy to behold. Always on critics' best-of lists at the end of the year, the attitude and focus of the restaurant remain the same — good food prepared well. There's no pretension here — it's all about the food. An extensive, well thought-out wine list means there is a pairing for every course, even dessert. Ask the sommelier for suggestions. Menu changes occur throughout the year, so check for new, exciting items.   Recommended dishes: Forest Grill burger, charcuterie, smoked trout …

Bites Nearby: what crêpe?

This week's Bites Nearby takes us to what crêpe, Royal Oak's only creperie.

what crêpe? is the brainchild of Paul Jenkins Jr. With no previous restaurant experience, Jenkins opened the eatery after a memorable crepe experience in Toronto.  Since opening, what crêpe? has expanded once with a second expansion on the horizon. Jenkins was recently granted a bistro license by Royal Oak, which allows him to serve alcohol, so cocktails and craft beers are available for sipping with, before or after crêpes.  Crêpes are more than enough for a normal appetite. If you are dining with another person, one savory and one sweet crêpe would be a perfectly satisfying meal.   Recommended dishes: Signature Ribeye Truffle, The Italian, The Revolution, Nutty Monkey, What Crispies with Black Pepper Crusted Ahi Tuna, Asian Vegetable …
