Should Schools Stop Requiring Foreign Language Classes?

Currently, students in the Berkley School District are required to take at least two years of foreign language classes.

The House Education Committee, hoping to free up more options for students when it comes to high school electives, approved two bills last week in Lansing that would eliminate the foreign language requirement for graduation. The proposal aims to give students not headed to college more vocational options in school by eliminating the two-year foreign language requirement, but the Michigan Department of Education opposes the bill, according to The Detroit News. 'My Name is Anne Frank' Brings History to Life in Berkley

Berkley High School orchestra and a cappella choir students receive a standing ovation Tuesday evening for their world premiere performance of the cantata.

A thunderous standing ovation rewarded Berkley High School orchestra and a cappella choir students Tuesday evening for their world premiere performance of "My Name is Anne Frank: A Cantata." Composer Volker Blumenthaler and lyricist Alexander Gruber, both from Germany, joined Holocaust survivors, parents and officials representing Berkley and Huntington Woods in the audience at Berkley High School's packed auditorium. The cantata kicked off a series of events the Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus in Farmington Hills will hold to celebrate its acquisition of one of 11 saplings from the chestnut tree that stood outside Anne Frank's window in Amsterdam and gave her hope as she hid during World War II. Berkley Students to Perform World Premiere of Cantata Based Anne Frank's Life

Composer Volker Blumenthaler and lyricist Alexander Gruber will visit from Germany to speak about their inspiration and hear "My Name is Anne Frank" performed in its entirety for the first time May 7 at Berkley High School.

The Berkley School District and Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus in Farmington Hills are proud to announce that the Berkley High School orchestra and choir will perform the American premiere of My Name is Anne Frank, a cantata written in commemoration of the life of Anne Frank, on May 7. Starting at 7 p.m. at the BHS Auditorium located at 2325 Catalpa, the performance is the world premiere of the composer Volker Blumenthaler's complete and original orchestration. The program features solos by Hazzan Daniel Gross (of Adat Shalom Synagogue) and Cantor Penny Steyer (of Temple Shir Shalom). Berkley Students Take 6th Place in 'Destination Imagination' State Competition

The Destination Imagination team from Pattengill Elementary was recognized for its “reBoot Detroit" project.

Pattengill Elementary School's Destination Imagination team recently took sixth place at the Destination Imagination State Finals competition. The team qualified for the state tournament - which took place on April 20 - after placing first in their regional tournament, according to the school district's most recent newsletter. Destination Imagination is an extracurricular activity in which students work in teams to develop creative solutions to complex challenges, according to the Michigan Creativity Association. Teams present solutions at sanctioned tournaments, where they display creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork skills that they have developed as a team. Five Berkley Schools Earn Michigan Green School Status

Find out which buildings were recognized Wednesday morning during a ceremony at the Oakland Schools campus in Waterford.

Five schools in the Berkley School District were among 173 throughout Oakland County recognized Wednesday for earning the Michigan Green School designation. Representatives from the schools gathered Wednesday morning at Oakland Schools in Waterford to receive an official Michigan Green School flag and a certificate signed by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and Oakland Schools Superintendent Vickie L. Markavitch. Schools must complete at least 10 of 20 "green" activities to earn the designation. Activities range from paper recycling to garden projects to the use of renewable energy. Schools that complete more than 10 activities may be eligible for "Emerald" or "Evergreen" status. Berkley Ranks Among America's Most Challenging High Schools

The school came in at No. 9 in Michigan on The Washington Post's 2013 list.

The Washington Post recently ranked Berkley High School at No. 9 in Michigan on its 2013 America's Most Challenging High Schools list. The school's state ranking was up from No. 21 in 2012 and No. 13 in 2011. Nationally, Berkley High School ranked at No. 954, up from 1,448 in 2012 and 1,072 in 2011. "America's Most Challenging High Schools ranks schools through an index formula that's a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year," The Washington Post says.
