Year in Review: Regional Transit Changes Direction

Despite the rejection of a proposed Woodward Avenue light rail line and a planned regional transit center in Troy, proponents of a regional transportation system remain optimistic.

The story: Light rail proponents began 2011 with high hopes for a Woodward Avenue line that would run from downtown Detroit north to Eight Mile and, potentially, even farther north, connecting the city and suburbs. A proposed regional transit center in Troy would have provided connecting routes throughout the area. By year-end, hopes for both the light-rail line and the transit center had been dashed. In December, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Gov. Rick Snyder rejected the light rail plan in favor of a bus rapid transit system that would be less expensive and quicker to implement. And, the Troy City Council voted 4-3 during the same month to end a regional transit center project that was 12 years in …

The longtime resident recalls her most memorable moments in office and says she plans to spend her time with family and, of course, volunteering on behalf of the city during her retirement.

The story: Former Berkley Mayor Marilyn Stephan, who was elected in 2005 and before that served on council since 1999, did not file to run in the Nov. 8 election. Former City Councilman Phil O'Dwyer, who ran unopposed, was elected mayor. The update: Stephan, who is expecting another grandchild in March, said she plans to spend her newfound free time doting on family. "I didn't intend to stay this long to begin with," she said with a smile. "I've served the community for 22 years. I think I've done my part." Prior to her career in city government, Stephan taught at Anderson Middle School, Norup International School and Berkley High School. She also served as Berkley Education Association union president for 10 years before her retirement in…

Year in Review: 12 Mile-Coolidge Intersection

The Berkley Downtown Development Authority will vote in January on whether to spend an estimated $375,000 to replace brick pavers at the corner with concrete and, possibly, stamped concrete in crosswalks.

The story: In June, we reported on a special work session between the Berkley City Council, Downtown Development Authority and Planning Commission where the clay pavers at the 12 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway intersection were discussed. A majority of members representing the three organizations advised City Manager Jane Bais-DiSessa that they'd prefer to see the pavers – which are crumbling and popping out of place in some spots – to be repaired in the short term using bricks and funds the city already has set aside for the corner and replaced in the future with partially stamped concrete. The story received eight comments on Berkley Patch, many expressing disagreement with the original project and a desire to see the intersection …

Yes, the paver have to go. It's to bad they didn't work out but the intersection at Coolidge and 11 looks good. I hope they don't spend money that City of Berkley has set aside to repair the roads. We passes a big bond a couple of years ago to do 12 Mile instead of waiting for the County to do it. I know we have issues with the roads in the neighborhood. Nothing was done down this way when that …   more ›
