The Berkley City Council passed an ordinance this week to rezone the property at 1010 Eaton from single-family residential district to parking district; a site plan for the lot will need to go before the Planning Commission and receive council approval.
The home at 1010 Eaton has been demolished to make way for a small parking lot after the Berkley City Council approved an ordinance this week that would rezone the piece of property owned by Vinsetta Garage. The property was rezoned from single-family residential district to parking district. The triangular property is bordered by an alley, an apartment building and a residence. The second reading was an item on the council's consent agenda Monday and passed with no further discussion. The Planning Commission held a public hearing – to which the property's neighbors were invited – on Sept. 25 and only one resident, who was in favor of the rezoning, spoke, City Planner Amy Vansen said during the first reading of the ordinance on Oct. 1. …

The City Council approved a first reading of the measure this week; it will be back on the agenda Oct. 15.
The Berkley City Council this week approved the first reading of an ordinance that would rezone a piece of property owned by Vinsetta Garage to make way for a small parking lot. The ordinance would rezone 1010 Eaton, which is on the north side of the street west of Woodward Avenue, from single-family residential district to parking district. The triangular property is bordered by an alley, an apartment building and a residence. City Planner Amy Vansen said Monday that the Planning Commission recommended the ordinance on the following grounds: Parking at the site would be a good use of the land, it is consistent with Berkley's master plan, it would benefit the residents and it wouldn't change the nature of the neighborhood. Berkley resident Betsy Saunders had been eagerly awaiting the opening of Vinsetta Garage restaurant on Woodward. She stopped often to check out the progress of the project, turning a historic, brick auto shop into a neighborhood eatery. Saunders was among Thursday's opening day customers and shares her impressions and photos with Berkley Patch: The secret is out, the mystery is over – Vinsetta Garage opened today on Woodward in Berkley and should be around for a long time. An old chain, an electrical cord and light bulb hang from original steel beams and wood – no repainting here. You look around and you know this was a garage and it is fun to see what their vision was to keep that theme. With high top tables, regular seating and …

Berkley City Councilwoman Lisa Platt Auensen shares her experience getting a preview of the space, and of course the food.
The 90-year-old Vinsetta Garage on Woodward Avenue is expected to open to the public sometime this week as a restaurant, and while no images of the renovated space have been circulated, we found the next best thing. UPDATE: Vinsetta Garage will open at 4 p.m. today. Among the few people granted a “sneak peek” at the full Vinsetta Garage experience was Berkley City Councilwoman Lisa Platt Auensen. She attended a preview event with other city officials last weekend and confirmed it’s everything people are hoping it to be and more. “I think this will be one of my new favorite places because the food is good, the drink selection is good and sitting in that space honestly just makes you feel good,” she said. Auensen and her husband, who live …

Betsy Saunders is a connoisseur of sampling not just foods, but brand new restaurants, and she's got Vinsetta Garage on her radar.
Anticipation is swirling for the opening of Vinsetta Garage restaurant in Berkley, expected to happen sometime this week. The converted auto repair shop embodies a Woodward Avenue history with a promise of spectacular menu items that Chef Aaron Cozadd is known to be a master of at Clarkston Union and Union Woodshop. These two things, combined with the suspense of the mystery opening, make for the perfect recipe of anticipation. Just ask Betsy Saunders of Berkley. She just might be one of the city’s most passionate foodies and makes it a point to scope out new restaurants around town. “I’ve been watching and watching to see when it will open. Each day I go by and watch it come together,” Saunders, 64, explained. “I’m quite excited at how it…

Take a sneak peak into the highly anticipated new space on Woodward in Berkley.
Finally, the week has arrived when the 90-year-old former auto garage on Woodward Avenue in Berkley is expected to reopen – this time as a restaurant. The grand opening of Vinsetta Garage has no set date yet, but it’s expected to open sometime this week, according to Nathan Skid of Crain’s Detroit. Friday, Skid blogged about the opening and his sneak peak at the restaurant located at 27799 Woodward Ave., just north of Westborn Market. “To be fair, K.C. Crain is one of the owners, and he happens to be the son of the chairman of the company that signs my paychecks,” Skid wrote. “My guess is he is not the one who is going to make this place what it is. That person would be Curt Catallo, who also owns Clarkston Union and the Union Woodshop, …

The family-friendly restaurant's drink menu will include Michigan-made offerings. "It's going to be groovy," says co-owner Curt Catallo.
The Berkley City Council approved the ownership transfer of a liquor license from a business in Clinton Township to the Vinsetta Garage property on Woodward Avenue during its meeting Monday night at City Hall. The license will allow Vinsetta Garage – formerly an auto repair shop – to serve beer, wine and liquor when it reopens late during the first quarter as a restaurant co-owned by Autoweek vice president and publisher KC Crain and restaurateur Curt Catallo. The Berkley Public Safety Department added one stipulation: The restaurant cannot offer beer to go, as the Resort Class C license permits. However, patrons will be permitted to buy wine by the case, as well as cork and carry bottles purchased but not fully consumed on the premises, …
