Veterans, Students Connect at Berkley High School

Military Appreciation Day brings history to life for ninth-graders Friday.

Students and veterans had the opportunity to connect Friday during Military Appreciation Day at Berkley High School. Ninth-grade history students did some first-hand learning during the event that teachers Jen Simone, Angie Church, Brittney Vaughn and Megan Blackwell organized. Military Appreciation Day was held in advance of Veterans Day on Sunday, Nov. 11. State Sen. John Pappageorge, R-Troy, who spoke about his years in the military, and state Rep. Ellen Cogen-Lipton, D-Huntington Woods, kicked things off with a morning assembly in the auditorium before the kids and vets broke off into groups to talk and share breakfast and lunch. Veterans Day, a day for America to remember her military service members, is Sunday, Nov. 11. Forecast Calls for Chance of Rain Saturday, High of 66 Degrees for Veterans Day Sunday

Highs in Berkley and Huntington Woods will be in the 60s all weekend, with showers likely Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Christmas music may be on the radio already, but that doesn't mean it's feeling anything like the holiday – or winter – outside. The National Weather Service predicts weekend temperatures in Berkley and Huntington Woods will be in the 60s. There's a 30 percent chance of showers, mostly before 9 a.m. Saturday, which will be mostly cloudy with a high of 62 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Overnight, the low will dip to 48 degrees, the forecasting agency says. On Sunday – Veterans Day – the skies will be mostly sunny with a high near 66 degrees, according to the NWS. Veterans Day: Take Time to Honor Those Who Serve

Several offices will closed – including Berkley and Huntington Woods City Halls, 45A District Court and the post office – so consider taking the time you would have used to run an errand to thank someone who's served our country.

On Veterans Day, we take time to honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. How will you commemorate the federal holiday? If you have time, consider stopping by to thank a veteran at Veterans of Foreign Wars–Berkley Post 9222, American Legion Post 374 or the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 19, in Berkley. If you are a veteran, you may want to take advantage of the many discounts and freebies being offered by restaurants, retail outlets and parks (see attached PDF) or an Oakland County Parks and Recreation special offer of free golf Friday.
