One Patch columnist shares her favorite reads of the season; leave a comment to tell us about yours!
It's the "It" book of the summer and it has more twists, turns and stomach-wrenching plunges than your favorite ride at Cedar Point. I'm talking about Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Simply said, it's the story of a wife gone missing. Or does she? Amy and Nick Dunne find love and marriage in New York City. Then, unemployment finds them and they are forced to move back to Nick's home state of Missouri. Amy does not want to be there. "I suppose it's not a compromise if only one of you considers it such." In Missouri — a state with the death penalty, as a matter of fact — the couple drifts farther and farther apart until one day the front door is left open and Amy is gone. Gone Girl is the kind of book that makes you text friends late at night …

Sixteen people entered our summer reading contest for the chance to win a Kindle and, while only one could win, they all had great suggestions. Below are some of the other reader-submitted recommendations that we'll be adding to our 2012 Summer Reading Guide. Have a favorite that you don't see on the list? Leave a comment below!
Karen Hagglund, a member of the Huntington Woods Public Library book discussion group, says she plans to give the device to her cousin as a graduation present.
Berkley Patch was happy to deliver a new Kindle on Thursday to our summer reading contest winner Karen Hagglund of Huntington Woods, who recommended "Caleb's Crossing" by Geraldine Brooks. Hagglund, who discovered the book in the Huntington Woods Public Library book discussion group, said she plans to give the Kindle to her cousin as a gift when she graduates in December from Olivet College in Olivet, Mich. "She'll really enjoy it," Hagglund said. "I love mine," said Hagglund, who already has a Kindle of her own. "It's just a great way to read. It's great to be able to carry your books in your pocket and read whatever you want." Hagglund said some members of her book discussion group were reluctant to adopt the digital reading devices, but…

My grandmother would be so pleased to see her timeless book included in the Patch summer reading lists.
Summertime, and the reading is easy .... or challenging, depending on our mood, right? I have just submitted my latest YA manuscript to my agent, so I am gearing up for a reading frenzy, a veritable feast of other people’s words. And I love them all, from picture books to the classics. For myself I am currently reading A Discovery of Witches. When I was a child, summertime meant getting lost in other worlds created by amazing authors, JUST FOR ME. (Right?) This summer, Patch has teamed up with James Patterson to create a reading list to encourage literacy: Read Kiddo Read. I was very pleased …

The library stopped its weekend hours through the summer, but with these recommendations, you can swing by after work or even on a lunch break to pick up your next great read.

With limited library hours and hectic schedules, it should still be just as easy to pick out a great book as if you had hours to browse the shelves. So we asked librarian Annette Majka to give us some recommendations this season. All of these books are not only New York Times best sellers and trending reads right now that Majka says are a must read, but they’re all available for checkout from the Berkley library.
