Berkley Welcomes More Than Two Dozen New Businesses in 2010

Entrepreneurs find opportunity in the wake of the economic downturn.

At least 25 businesses opened in Berkley during 2010 and, while officials predict challenges ahead, they are cautiously optimistic about what the new year holds. The recent recession – declared over in June 2009 by the National Bureau of Economic Research – changed the nation's economic landscape, making it more difficult to obtain financing but also creating opportunities. While it's too soon for the state to have compiled data on new businesses in 2010, said Richard Temkin, Michigan District director of the U. S. Small Business Administration, it appears that the economy has hit bottom, and better days are around the corner.
