The restaurant was forced to shutter operations after failed negotiations with its landlord, according to an e-mail sent to customers, and plans to reopen in a new location.
Hogger's BBQ in Berkley has closed its doors, but may reopen in a new location. The 2012 Berkley Patch Readers' Choice award-winner was forced to shutter operations after failed negotiations with its landlord, according to an e-mail sent to customers. "We have lost our lease after many months of disagreements with our landlord. We really wish we had been able to negotiate with him, however we were unsuccessful," the e-mail stated. "We are currently working negotiations with another building right here in Berkley." Customer Rich Schneider, who received the e-mail, said Thursday he is sad about the closing, but hopeful Hogger's will reopen. "It's a great little location (the owner) lost in the city, but maybe the new location will be better…

During a press conference at the Southfield Public Library today, State Senators Vincent Gregory (D-14th District) and Virgil Smith (D-4th District) and U.S. Rep. Gary Peters (D-9th Congressional) discussed their collaborative efforts to help unemployed entrepreneurs through Self-Employment Assistance. Gregory and Smith have introduced bills to allow out-of-work Michiganders to collect unemployment insurance benefits while working toward the launch of a new small business. Starting a new business is a full time job in itself and providing the incentive would help spur new economic development opportunities and create new jobs, the lawmakers say. In Congress, Peters helped write the STARTUP Act and pass key provisions into law that provide …

The event kicked off holiday sales for downtown shops.
The second annual Small Business Saturday got off to a big start Nov. 26 as customers descended upon the stores in downtown Berkley, waiting to purchase something one-of-a-kind. “You go to Toys “R” Us, you go to Target, you go to any major retailer and it’s very hard to find anything made in Michigan or made in America,” said Beata Alghabra, a Lathrup Village resident and Yellow Door Art Market shopper. "We’re just picking up holiday gifts and things for teachers and for the kids, just something different that’s more of a keepsake that they can open on Christmas Day and it’s still meaningful." From artistic pieces and unique books to shirts representing Detroit, there is no shortage of creativity in Berkley’s downtown shops, as Small …
