June Moon Furniture in Berkley has had a banner year. The home decor and design shop on Coolidge Highway opened one year ago Thursday and owner Maureen Popkin has since built up a loyal clientele, introduced new furniture lines and spearheaded the launch of the Coolidge Collection of businesses. She will mark the anniversary with a free reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the shop during the Coolidge Collection's monthly First Thursdays, when businesses along the highway stay open late and offer special goodies to entice shoppers. During a press conference at the Southfield Public Library today, State Senators Vincent Gregory (D-14th District) and Virgil Smith (D-4th District) and U.S. Rep. Gary Peters (D-9th Congressional) discussed their collaborative efforts to help unemployed entrepreneurs through Self-Employment Assistance. Gregory and Smith have introduced bills to allow out-of-work Michiganders to collect unemployment insurance benefits while working toward the launch of a new small business. Starting a new business is a full time job in itself and providing the incentive would help spur new economic development opportunities and create new jobs, the lawmakers say. The second annual Small Business Saturday got off to a big start Nov. 26 as customers descended upon the stores in downtown Berkley, waiting to purchase something one-of-a-kind. “You go to Toys “R” Us, you go to Target, you go to any major retailer and it’s very hard to find anything made in Michigan or made in America,” said Beata Alghabra, a Lathrup Village resident and Yellow Door Art Market shopper.
