Berkley Schools' 'To Do' List: Roof Repairs, Hurley Field Turf Replacement, Air Conditioning and More

District plans more than $900,000 in capital improvements through the 2012-13 school year.

While the highlight of Monday night's Board of Education meeting was Dennis McDavid's ascension to the district's top job, the business of running a school district continued. Matters ranging from budget negotiations to an analysis of Berkley students' current MEAP scores kept the board engaged. Larry Gallagher, deputy superintendent and director of Finance for the district, shared with the board a laundry list of various capital improvements scheduled through the 2012-13 school year totaling more than $900,000, including: Gallagher was quick to underscore that these improvements were not being allocated out of money from the district's general operating fund, which goes to paying teacher salaries and other day-to-day expenses. Berkley MEAP Scores 'Disappointing,' but Above State Averages

District's curriculum director reports on the 2011 test results with new cut scores and previews a new evaluation test set to replace the MEAP.

Berkley's 2011 MEAP scores were "disappointing," but overall the school district's students taking the test were on par with other Oakland County districts and still scored well above the state averages. Mary Beth Fitzpatrick, the district's director of Curriculum, Technology, Assessment and Grants, presented a breakdown of the district's 2011 MEAP scores at Monday night's Board of Education meeting. Some of the results were, in her own words, "disappointing." The Michigan Department of Education's new, more rigorous way of evaluating test scores for grades 3-9, known as cut scores, brought down the scores for Berkley and around the state. School Board Agenda: MEAP Report, Recognitions and More

The Berkley Board of Education meets on a new superintendent and other matters, starting at 7 o'clock tonight.

In addition to appointing a new superintendent, the Berkley Board of Education will consider a variety of topics at its regularly scheduled meeting tonight, including: MEAP report: Mary Beth Fitzpatrick, director of Curriculum, Technology, Assessment and Grants, will present the district’s results from the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP). The presentation will highlight the student scores for 2011. Fitzpatrick will also show a comparison between this year’s and last year’s scores as reported by MDE, along with a review of the overall state assessment program. This year’s scores are of particular significance due to the drastic change in scores in all Michigan schools. Board of Education Honors Outgoing Berkley Mayor

Former Berkley School District teacher Marilyn Stephan's term will end Nov. 21 when Phil O'Dwyer is sworn in as mayor.

OAK PARK – The Berkley Board of Education honored outgoing Berkley Mayor Marilyn Stephan, a former Berkley School District teacher, during its meeting Monday night at the Avery Center. Stephan, a Berkley resident since 1957, attended the meeting with her husband George, a Berkley High School graduate and city resident since 1940, and received accolades from Superintendent Michael Simeck. "We wanted to say publicly how much we've enjoyed working with you," Simeck said, citing some of the mayor's accomplishments during her years of public service to Berkley, including: Stephan said she was most proud of helping to establish a standing Environmental Advisory Committee during her time as mayor and that the most difficult part of the job was …

Candidates File for November Elections

A mix of incumbents and new faces will contend for positions on Berkley City Council, Huntington Woods City Commission and Berkley School District Board of Education.

The race is officially on for the Nov. 8 general election, when positions on the Berkley City Council, Huntington Woods City Commission and Berkley School District Board of Education will be filled. The filing deadline for candidates in each race was 4 p.m. Tuesday and the slates include incumbents and new faces. Following are the names of candidates who filed with the Elections Division of the Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds Office for November races in Berkley and Huntington Woods. (Vote for not more than one; two-year term) Mayor Marilyn Stephan did not file to run in the November election, which leaves O'Dwyer as the sole candidate.
