Beaumont cardiologist Justin Trivax studied dozens of Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank marathoners to find out.
The interest in marathon running has exploded during the past few decades, with more than 20,000 runners expected to cross the finish line Sunday in the Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon. But is it dangerous to participate in a 26.2 mile run? In 1976 there were approximately 25,000 people in the U.S. participating in marathons, but in 2012 the number has jumped to more than half a million, according to Beaumont cardiologist Justin Trivax, who has put together a study to find out if running a marathon is too much of a good thing. [Do you plan to participate in this weekend's marathon? Leave a comment!] In 2009, three runners collapsed and died of heart-related problems during the Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon. Thousands opt not to run Monday as temperatures reached into the 80s.
With temperatures rising dangerously into the 80s Monday, seven of eight registered runners from Berkley and Huntington Woods finished the Boston Marathon. It was the second-slowest Boston Marathon race since 1985, as the unseasonable weather slowed the leaders and may have convinced as many as 4,300 entrants to sit this one out, according to a USA Today report. Wesley Korir, a Kenyan citizen, won the marathon in 2:12:40. Fellow Kenyan Sharon Cherop won the women's race in 2:31:50. A total of 22,426 runners started the 26.2 mile race – about 84 percent of the registered field of almost 27,000, with many of the no-shows expected to take race organizers up on their offer for a deferment into next year's race. Here's how the local runners …

This program prepares people to run or walk a 5K (3.1 mile) race in six weeks. It's also a stepping stone to the 16-week half-marathon training program that begins June 7. This first program meets at 6 p.m. Thursday at the RARA building in downtown Rochester. To register, go to www.rararegistration.org (choose adult programs/fitness). The cost is $60. This is the fifth year for the half-…

Here's what will change and what will stay the same for this year's race, which will have a south Oakland County annex to the training program.
There are 234 days between now and the biggest gathering of runners and walkers in all of Oakland County. This year's Brooksie Way Half-Marathon will be Sept. 30 — a week earlier than in years past. In 2011, 27 Berkley and Huntington Woods residents ran in the annual race The date was moved to avoid a conflict with World Communion Sunday, which takes place Oct. 7, the first Sunday in October. That's the day the race typically would have been scheduled. The September date also leaves more time between the Brooksie and the Detroit marathon, which is Oct. 21. This year, south Oakland County runners also will have the chance to train in the Brooksie program without heading all the way to Rochester Hills. "There are a lot of pluses to the date …
