Red Wings Alumni to Play Hockey for O'Rourke Charity

Tickets are still available for Dec. 21 charity game at Plymouth’s Compuware Arena.

Red and blue may not be Christmas colors, but the two will face off in the spirit of the season to raise funds for the family of fallen West Bloomfield Police Department Officer Patrick O'Rourke. The Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association and the Joe Kocur Foundation for Children will hit the ice at Compuware Arena in Plymouth Dec. 21 to play a charity hockey game, the proceeds of which will be donated to the O'Rourke Family Trust. O'Rourke, 39, was fatally shot Sept. 9 while responding with other officers to what police believed could have been a suicidal man. Red Wings Ring Bells, Raise $17,150 for Salvation Army

Tough on the ice, the Detroit Red Wings showed their softer side Friday when they rang bells and raised $17,150 for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign throughout Metro Detroit. Six players, the team’s coach and general manager took some time away from their NHL Central Division race and collected donations for about two hours Friday in Plymouth, Troy, Northville and Birmingham, allowing fans a chance to get personal with their favorite Red Wings while giving a boost to the Salvation Army’s holiday fundraising. Red Wings to Ring Bells for Salvation Army on Friday

Six Detroit players, coach and general manager scheduled to collect donations in Plymouth, Northville, Birmingham and Troy.

Members of the Detroit Red Wings will be sporting red kettles Friday in Plymouth, Northville, Birmingham and Troy to raise money for the Salvation Army, according to a news release from the team. Coach Mike Babcock and Ken Holland, the team's executive vice president and general manager, will collect donations from 3:30-5:30 p.m. outside Hiller's Market in downtown Northville. Holland is serving as the honorary chairman for the Salvation Army's 2011 Red Kettle Campaign for the sixth straight year, according to the news release. Drew Miller and Valtteri Filppula of the Red Wings will be at the Kroger in Plymouth.
