Bike Stolen; Windows Broken; Woman Takes Items from Rite Aid

The following are highlights from Berkley Public Safety Department reports between Sept. 13 and Sept. 20. Officers responded to a report at 9:07 p.m. Sept. 20 that a woman had used scissors to bypass security tags and placed products into her purse without paying at the Rite Aid on 12 Mile Road in Berkley. Officers stopped the woman as she left the store and observed two MP3 players with damaged casings, what appeared to be new sunglasses and toiletries, and scissors in her purse, according to a report. The woman told the officers she paid for the items, but after one of the officers pointed out the Rite Aid price tag on one of the MP3 players, she admitted taking all of the items except the sunglasses, which a store employee said she had …

Police Blotter: Car Stolen, Tools Taken, Driver Flees Accident Scene

The following are highlights from reports from the Berkley Public Safety Department between Sept. 6 and Sept. 13: A resident in the 2880 block of Griffith reported that his Honda Civic was stolen Sept. 10. The man said he parked the vehicle in his driveway, which exits onto Wiltshire, at approximately midnight and when he awoke at approximately 7:30 a.m., it was gone. The man said the vehicle was locked and that he had the keys, according to the report. The responding officer said there were no signs of forced entry at the scene. There are no suspects in the case, which remains under investigation. A homeowner reported that between 2 p.m. Sept. 8 and 7:30 a.m. Sept. 10, tools were taken from inside a house under renovation in the 2680 …

Police Blotter: Home Invader Takes Jewelry, Laptop; Tools Stolen From Truck

The following are highlights from reports from the Berkley Public Safety Department since Aug. 3: A resident in the 3120 block of Tyler reported that between 6:45 p.m. Aug. 2 and 8 a.m. Aug. 3 someone entered her home and took a jewelry box, jewelry and a laptop. The woman told the reporting officer that a contractor who had been working on her home knew she kept a spare key under a rock near her back door. She told the officer that she advised the contractor she would be out for the night and to keep working. The resident reported that nothing was disturbed when she stopped by the house at 6:45 p.m. Aug. 2. When the woman returned home at approximately 8 a.m. Aug. 3, her back door was open, the spare key was missing and the jewelry box, …

The following are highlights from reports from the Berkley Public Safety Department since July 27: The Berkley Public Safety Department responded to a 911 call about a man pounding on the doors at the Berkley Front and refusing to leave at 2:40 a.m. July 29, according to a report. Witnesses who work at the Berkley Front told the reporting officer they were closing after last call and the suspect began yelling expletives as he was led out of the bar and then began banging on the side door. The witnesses said they told the man the bar was closed and that if he didn't leave, they would call police, at which point he went to the rear door and smashed the window, prompting one of the witnesses to call 911, according to the report. The following are highlights from reports from the Berkley and Huntington Woods Public Safety Departments since July 22: The owner of Jolly Auto Service Inc. on Eleven Mile Road in Berkley reported at 5:30 p.m. July 24 that a window air-conditioning unit was taken from his business. The man said he noticed the unit had been removed when he went to go home for the day, according to a Berkley Public Safety report. The responding officer observed an open window in the cinder block wall where the unit used to be, as well as two wooden strips in a trash can below the window that had been removed to gain access to the window. The following are highlights from reports from the Berkley Public Safety Department since June 22: A man was arrested on a charge of retail fraud at 2:52 p.m. June 25 at Westborn Market after a manager reported seeing the man leave the store with a bag full of groceries. According to the responding officer's report, the manager said he confronted the suspect as the man walked toward his vehicle and asked whether he had a receipt. The suspect said he did not, the manager reported. The manager said the man attempted to close his car door and back out, but was stopped; both men returned to the store and Public Safety was called, according to the report. Report: Speeding Driver Stopped in Huntington Woods was Drunk

A man who was speeding on I-696 and pulled over in Huntington Woods was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated, a Huntington Woods Public Safety Department stated. At about 11:30 p.m. March 15, a marked Huntington Woods patrol car observed a Cadillac CTS sedan traveling westbound on the freeway at 99 mph according to a radar reading, a Huntington Woods Public Safety report stated. The Cadillac blew past the patrol car, which was parked along the embankment, and never reduced speed. The officer followed the suspect vehicle, which exited at Coolidge and pulled over at the corner of Coolidge and Victoria. The officer stated in his report that upon contact with the driver there was a strong smell of alcohol and the driver’s eyes …

Highlights from reports from the Berkley Public Safety Department for March 8-16: March 11: An officer patroling the area around Henley and 11 Mile Road noticed the smell of smoke in the air around 4:30 p.m. The officer located the source, which he described in his report as a campfire being made behind a commercial building by a man later identified as a 25-year-old homeless man; the man said he was trying to keep warm. The officer found narcotics paraphernalia on the man and arrested him. March 8: Police were called to the Silver Tower convenience store on the 27000 block of Woodward in Berkley after a man reportedly stole a bag of returnable bottles. Police Blotter: Man Flees Accident Scene; Woman Hits Tree; Wallet Taken

Following are highlights from reports from the Public Safety Departments in Berkley and Huntington Woods since Jan. 19: A 911 caller reported to the Berkley Public Safety Department at 12:24 a.m. Jan. 21 that a driver hit a vehicle parked in front of their home in the 3750 block of Kenmore and fled the scene. The vehicle that was hit was legally parked and a relative of the owner was able to follow the suspect long enough to obtain a license plate number, according to a public safety report. A neighbor reported the fleeing driver speeding west on Webster near Greenfield, but officers were not able to locate him, according to the report. Police Blotter: Intruder Ransacks Hiller's Office; Stuffed Animals Taken from Vehicle

Public Safety Department officials in Berkley and Huntington Woods have been busy with a variety of reports since Dec. 15, including the following. A victim in the 3700 block of 11 Mile Road in Berkley reported at 4:42 p.m. Tuesday that a Michigan license plate was taken from his work van. There is no known suspect. A father and daughter in the 2300 block of Oxford in Berkley reported at 12:32 p.m. Dec. 15 that a state of Michigan disability parking placard and nine stuffed animals were taken the day before from inside their locked vehicle, which had been parked in the Oxford Towers lot since Dec. 13.
