A resident in the 2160 block of Gardner reported that at approximately 9:45 p.m. April 4 she found her Virgin Mary statue toppled onto its side with the head broken off. The woman reported hearing a noise on her porch at approximately 9:30 p.m., but said she didn't see anyone, according to a Berkley Public Safety Department report. There is no known suspect in the case. Residents or business owners who have information to report or who notice something unusual in their neighborhood can call the Berkley Public Safety Department at 248-658-3380 or the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department at 248-541-1180. Public Safety officials encourage residents and business owners to keep their doors and windows secured at all times.

The Berkley Public Safety Department supplied the following information.
More than $1,000 worth of sterling silver recently was taken from a vendor's case at Oddfellows Antiques, according to the Berkley Public Safety Department. The vendor reported that the hasp lock was cut off a display case and $1,390 worth of sterling silver items were removed, the responding officer wrote. The store's owner said she could not pinpoint when the theft occurred but that it was sometime between noon Jan. 7 and noon Jan. 8, according to the officer's report. There are no known suspects. An elderly woman reported to the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department on Dec. 7 that she was the victim a phone scam. The woman, whom the reporting officer noted was accompanied by her adult son, said that approximately 8 p.m. Dec. 6, a man claiming to be her grandson called her home phone. The man asked her to send his attorney money because he had been involved in an accident in the Philippines and instructed her not to contact his father, according to the report. A Berkley resident reported Dec. 13 that his outdoor Christmas decorations were vandalized. The man told the Berkley Public Safety Department that sometime between 6 p.m. Dec. 12 and 6 p.m. Dec. 13, someone slashed three inflatable snowmen on his lawn in the 2770 block of Kipling, according to the report. The man said he last saw the snowmen inflated Dec. 12 and found the decorations, valued at $100, slashed and deflated Dec. 13, the report said. There are no suspects in the incident. A man was arrested Dec. 3 after running a red light and carrying a concealed pistol with an expired license, according to the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department. The man was driving southbound on Woodward Avenue at 4:38 p.m. when he ran a red light at 11 Mile Road, according to a Huntington Woods Public Safety report. After being stopped, the driver handed the reporting officer his driver's license and a concealed pistol license; he said he was carrying a pistol and his vehicle was a rental, according to the incident report. A Huntington Woods Public Safety officer reported that he stopped a speeding driver at approximately 1:05 a.m. Nov. 12 on Interstate 696 and discovered a concealed weapon, LSD and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. The driver, who was headed eastbound, passed the officer, who was stationed on an overpass just east of Coolidge Highway, traveling at 85 miles per hour, according to the report. The officer stopped the driver, who had changed lanes without signalling, just east of Woodward Avenue, the report said. A resident reported Nov. 5 to the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department that a customized bicycle was taken from his garage on Borgman Avenue. The man told the responding officer that he had last seen the men's mountain bike approximately a week prior leaning against the back wall of his garage with a women's bicycle in front of it. The women's bike was still there Nov. 5, the officer wrote in his report. Two residents reported to the Berkley Public Safety Department that valuables were taken from their locked vehicles in Berkley. There are no suspects in either case, both of which are under investigation. A resident in the 2420 block of Oakshire reported that he parked his work van in his driveway at approximately 5 p.m. Oct. 31 and when he returned to the vehicle at approximately 12:45 a.m. Nov. 4, the driver's side door was not fully closed. The man reported that the driver-side seat was pushed up and clothing that had been between the front seats was thrown on the passenger seat. The intruder fled in a stolen silver Ford Ranger with a red logo on the door that says "Oxbow," police said.
A Ferndale homeowner reportedly shot at a person trying to break into his home on Friday morning, according to Ferndale Police. At approximately 10:45 a.m. on Friday, a homeowner on Edgewood Place near Eight Mile and Woodward discovered that his home was being attacked by an unknown person, Ferndale Police Lt. Gary Whiting wrote in a press release. The homeowner fired his handgun at the suspect, who fled to a waiting stolen 1997 silver Ford Ranger pickup truck with a red logo on the door that says "Oxbow." The Michigan license plate number is CB89913. The truck may have been struck by the bullets fired by the homeowner, police said.
