Teachers and school staff throughout Oakland County will receive expert training in the next two months on how to react in an active school shooter situation. County officials said Friday that the Oakland County Sheriff's Office and the county's Homeland Security Division will conduct five training sessions for school personnel starting in two weeks. In addition, Sheriff Michael Bouchard will give active shooter presentations on site at various schools in the county. Bouchard has received numerous requests for the presentations, he said. Gov. Rick Snyder has asked for a statewide moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. Friday, and Patches in Michigan and across the country will join in a Web Moment of Silence to mark the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Snyder said the moment of silence was requested by Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy, who issued a proclamation calling on the citizens of Connecticut to observe December 21, 2012, as a day of mourning. Malloy sent a letter to all the nation's governors asking them to observe a moment of silence in remembrance of the fallen. Patch sites across the country will mark the tragedy at 9:30 a.m. EST. The gun rights group issues a statement about preventing future tragedies after the shooting that killed 28, including the gunman, in Connecticut.
After days of silence, the National Rifle Association released a statement Tuesday on the tragic shooting in Newtown, saying it will make "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again." In the release, the organization begins to explain its silence, saying: "Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting." Michigan's governor tells reporters the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre gives him 'clear pause' on legislation that would allow gun owners with concealed weapons permits to carry inside schools.
Gov. Rick Snyder said Monday that he's not necessarily ready to sign off on Senate Bill 59 which would broaden Michigan's concealed-carry laws. "I wouldn't say I'm prepared to sign it by any means," the Republican governor told MLive.com. The bill, approved by the state Senate in late November and the state House just hours before Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, CT, allows gun owners with concealed weapon permits and additional training to carry firearms inside schools and day care centers and at sporting events. Guns are not the problem people are the problem. Cars kill more people than any other tool we use. So lets ban every thing that kills people.
