'Remarkable People': Top 10 Graduates of Berkley High School Class of 2012

As he prepares to leave Berkley, Superintendent Michael Simeck celebrates the achievements of the seniors.

Before he accepted his own congratulations for a job well done, outgoing Berkley Superintendent Michael Simeck took time to celebrate the achievements of the top graduates in the Berkley High School Class of 2012. “When I arrived at this district, the first thing I noticed was what remarkable students were in the district, what remarkable families they came from and how well the district knows its children,” Simeck said. “All these individuals truly are remarkable in their own way. They’re into some really cool stuff.” As he honored each student, Simeck read from a document that high school staff members put together: “Intelligent, achievement-oriented, ambitious, articulate and charismatic are just a few of the adjectives that come to my …

'Good to Great': Retiring Berkley Schools Superintendent Honored

State legislators, city officials, school administrators and parents are among the many people who turned out Monday night to show their appreciation for Michael Simeck.

Passionate, dedicated and leader – all were used to describe retiring Berkley School District Superintendent Michael Simeck and his commitment to public education before he oversaw his last Board of Education meeting Monday. A large crowd of people filled the seats of the Avery Center conference room. Their titles ranged from state representative to mayor to mom and all were there to give their well wishes to the outgoing superintendent as he leaves for a position in Illinois and to thank him for his work over the last five years. “I can’t express what you’ve done for public education in words,” Michigan Sen. John Pappageorge said about Simeck’s speeches in Lansing and Washington, DC, on the importance of public education to states and …

Berkley Superintendent Candidate Handles Interview with Ease

McDavid tackles topics such as school bond, technology, finances and management style before a friendly audience Tuesday night.

Any concern candidate Dennis McDavid may have felt interviewing for Berkley Schools’ top job Tuesday night likely evaporated once he walked into the school board’s conference room to a round of applause. Dressed smartly in a dark suit, McDavid flashed a smile toward the crowd of mainly parents who came to hear his answers to a variety of questions posed to him by the Board of Education and the audience about his qualifications for superintendent of schools. Current Superintendent Michael Simeck announced his resignation Feb. 14, effective at the end of the school year. Following past practice of looking internally for superintendent candidates, the board invited McDavid, the district’s current director of Schools and Human Resources, to …

What Do You Want in a New Berkley Superintendent?

Internal candidate Dennis McDavid will be interviewed Tuesday night by the Board of Education with input from the community.

Tonight, the Berkley Board of Education will interview Dennis McDavid, currently Berkley Schools’ human resources director, for the position of superintendent. Current Berkley Schools Superintendent Mike Simeck announced Feb. 14 that he would resign at the conclusion of 2011-12 academic year. So far, McDavid is the only candidate for the job and the school board does not intend to conduct an outside search. The board says it will consider questions from the public. So tell us – and the school board – what questions you have for the superintendent candidate as well as what traits are you looking for in a new superintendent. Please leave your questions and suggestions in the comment area below. The board's special session begins at 8:15 p.m…

Berkley School Board Moves Quickly to Replace Outgoing Superintendent

With a public interview of a single internal candidate set for tonight, some are unhappy or puzzled over a lack of an external search or more candidates to consider.

Three weeks after Berkley Schools Superintendent Mike Simeck announced he would resign at the conclusion of 2011-12 academic year, the Board of Education plans to unveil its top — and thus far only — choice to replace him during tonight’s school board special session. The unusual public interview of applicant Dennis McDavid, currently Berkley Schools’ human resources director, takes place amid concerns by some that a decision by the board to forgo an external candidate search may be shortsighted. In a statement released to parents last week by board President Paul Ellison enumerating reasons he and other board members demurred on looking outside the district for a new superintendent, the one-page letter focused on two key rationales: …

For those who support interviewing only one candidate that is fine, if you know that candidate on a professional level. I, however do not. So, I can not attest to Mr. McDavid's qualifications or leadership experience. I have read his bio and I am undecided. I am sure he is a notable Human Resource Director, but does that make him a shoe in for superintendent? I understand that the district wants …   more ›

UPDATE: Berkley School Board to Interview Superintendent Candidate Tuesday

Community invited to a special session with candidate Dennis McDavid, the district’s current director of Schools and Human Resources, to replace Mike Simeck, who announced Feb. 14 that he will be leaving for new position in Illinois.

The Berkley Board of Education is moving quickly to choose a successor to outgoing superintendent Mike Simeck, who announced last month that he is leaving at the end of the school year for a position in the Chicago area. The board has invited Dennis McDavid, the district’s current director of Schools and Human Resources, to interview for the superintendent's position, according to a statement from board President Paul J. Ellison. McDavid’s interview will take place during a special session of the Berkley Board of Education at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.  "The unusual interview time is to accommodate elementary PTA parents and staff who may wish to attend," Ellison said in the statement. "The Berkley Board believes its most important task is hiring …

One thing that I do find interesting is that the District getting Mr. Simeck started their search in March of 2011http://www.lfhs.org/superintendent_focus_groups.html with a community survey to invite opinions of what would make a good Superintendent and by their 11/28/11 meeting they had paper copies of resumes to review. I just can't figure out why our search didn't start or appear to start …   more ›

Departing Berkley Superintendent: 'It Has Been a Fantastic 5 Years'

As Michael Simeck looks toward moving to Lake Forest, IL, he looks back at the school district's accomplishments and a bright future.

Berkley Schools Superintendent Michael Simeck said his decision to leave for a new position was tough, but he feels he’s leaving the district in good shape. Simeck announced Tuesday that he will be leaving the district for a similar position in Lake Forest, IL, effective July 1. “It’s a very big decision,” Simeck said in an email sent to parents earlier in the day. “There’s no question that it has been a fantastic five years for my family and for our district.” Personally, the husband and father of three sees the decision as bittersweet, but welcomes the new challenges and opportunity. “It’s very hard to leave the friends my children, my wife and I have made here, and the wonderful community Berkley is,” Simeck told Berkley Patch. “The …

Berkley Schools Superintendent Resigns Effective July 1

Michael Simeck announces he's leaving for the superintendent position in Lake Forest, IL.

Berkley Schools Superintendent Michael Simeck announced Tuesday that he will be leaving the district for a similar position in Lake Forest, IL, effective July 1. In an email message sent to parents, Simeck said he felt the five years he was with Berkley Schools have "been incredible and taught me much about the benefits of involving others, active listening, and sincere response." Simeck said the new position in Lake Forest – for Lake Forest High School District 115 and Lake Forest Elementary School District 67 – is a very good match professionally and a "significant opportunity for us as a family."  Simeck has been superintendent of the Berkley School District since 2007, and previously served as superintendent in Dansville, MI, from 2003…
