VIDEO: 92-Year-Old Marine Honored on Memorial Day

Rochester Hills resident Leon Gorsline is inducted into the Berkley-based Cpl. Stanley L. Moore Detachment of the Marine Corps League.

Nearly 70 years after serving as a Marine sergeant during the Guadalcanal Campaign, 92-year-old Leon Gorsline, while proudly wearing his favorite Marine Corps baseball cap, was inducted into the Berkley-based Cpl. Stanley L. Moore Detachment of the Marine Corps League on Monday afternoon. The brief ceremony at the Rochester Hills MediLodge, where Gorsline resides, immediately followed the City of Troy Memorial Day Ceremony, during which several members of the League had just performed Honor Guard duties. The League waived the normal membership dues for Gorsline, who received a Purple Heart after he was shot in Peliliu. Gorsline was one of only six Marines from his platoon to survive six months in Guadalcanal. "Leon is the epitome of the …

PHOTOS: Memorial Day Observance in Berkley

A crowd of nearly 50 gathered in Roseland Park Cemetery on Monday morning for a ceremony to remember, honor and salute those who have given their lives in service of the United States.

A Memorial Day observance was held in front of the veterans monument of Roseland Park Celemetary in Berkley on Monday morning, paying tribute to those who have given their lives in service of the U.S. military. Around 50 people gathered, many of them members of the 1st District of The American Legion 347 leading the ceremony, others local family members honoring special servicemen and servicewomen in their lives. The Denby High School ROTC conducted the placing of the colors to begin the observance set in the steamy outdoor tent around 10:30 a.m., followed by several speakers addressing POW-MIA matters and the importance of Memorial Day. Richard Chatman, department commander, gave the Memorial Day address and noted that since 2003 he’d …

5 Things to Throw on the Grill Memorial Day Weekend

From kabobs to grilled watermelon, here are a few new things you can slap on the barbie this holiday weekend.

For many, Memorial Day weekend is about relaxing, spending time with friends and family and, of course, grilling. If you are game to try out a new recipe this long weekend, here are a few Patch favorites. This recipe comes from Oakland Township-Lake Orion Patch and serves two. Ingredients Marinade Ingredients Directions Combine and blend the marinade ingredients in a bowl or plastic bag. Cut up the steak into chunks and add to the marinade; coat thoroughly. Marinate for at least a couple hours. Boil the potatoes until somewhat tender (but not too tender, or they'll fall apart on the grill). Cut the potatoes, red pepper, mushrooms and sweet onion into chunks; add all ingredients to the skewers (see photos). Grill the skewers, turning …

Huntington Woods Pool Opens for the Season

With temps reaching 90 degrees, a full house is expected at the Huntington Woods Recreation Center this weekend.

With temperatures like these, who isn’t ready to hit the pool? Thankfully, after a week that’s seen temps soar through the 80s, the pool at the Huntington Woods Recreation Center is opening this weekend. The pool will open for the season at 11 a.m. Saturday, just in time for the holiday weekend, and it’s expected to draw a full crowd. “Typically, the Fourth of July is pretty darn busy, but I think this year Memorial Day will be just as busy,” said Mary Gustafson, Huntington Woods program coordinator and aquatic director. Though it’s only happened three times before, Gustafson said she wouldn’t be surprised if the pool reached its capacity of 480 swimmers and a line formed on opening day. “It’s just so warm,” she said. The outdoor pool …

Weekend Weather: Memorial Day Might Call for an Umbrella

With highs expected to reach 90 degrees and a chance of showers all weekend, know when to have the sunscreen or an umbrella this long holiday weekend.

With the holiday weekend here, it’s a good idea to plan for the weather that might put a damper on outdoor activities if you’re not prepared. The next few days definitely call for an umbrella on hand, with the chance of storms each day. The good news is that intermittently, throughout the 30 percent chance of rain until Tuesday, the National Weather Service forecasts sunny skies and warm weather. It'll be a good weekend to hit the Huntington Woods pool, which opens for the season Saturday. Here’s a look at what’s ahead: Saturday: After the morning, expect a chance of showers and thunderstorms, though skies may look partly sunny and the high will reach 80 degrees. The evening temperature will drop to around 65 degrees. Sunday: The chance of…
