The owner has removed the building's facade in an effort to determine its condition before moving forward with development plans, City Planner Amy Vansen says.
Work is under way at the long-vacant site of the former Margarita's Mexican Restaurant on Woodward Avenue in Berkley. "They’ve removed the facade so they could determine the condition of the building underneath before moving forward with any site plan approval for a facade change," City Planner Amy Vansen said. The front of the building has been stripped down to bare brick and the interior has been gutted as well. The Woodward Avenue property that was purchased in September by Kevin Denha, who owns a number of T-Mobile stores, has been vacant for more than a year. Denha has not returned calls for comment. The former Margarita's Mexican Restaurant in Berkley that has stood vacant for more than a year has a new owner. The Woodward Avenue property was purchased this month by Kevin Denha from previous owner Luis Gomez, City Planner Amy Vansen said Tuesday. Vansen said Denha owns a number of T-Mobile stores but has not submitted any applications for the Margarita's site, so she cannot say what his plans are. Leave a comment!] Denha has met with an architect regarding his options, cleaned out the building's interior and placed barricades outside due to parking-related issues, Vansen said. Berkley officials say it is unclear who will take responsibility for the vacant site.
Margarita's Mexican Restaurant in Berkley has closed its doors and city officials say the eatery's future remains uncertain. A notice on the Woodward Avenue restaurant's front door says the building has been deemed vacant and that if it remains so as of Nov. 30, it must be registered and inspected. "We've got no info on any new business or where (owner Luis Gomez) went," Berkley Building Official Duaine Franks said. Gomez could not be reached for comment. Multiple U.S. Postal Service delivery notices are strewn about the property and a demolition appears under way inside the building.
