5 Facts About the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Here's a look at some of the civil rights leader's ties to Metro Detroit.

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. left his mark during his lifetime as a civil rights activist, including during several stops in the Detroit area. For example, the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner delivered an early version of his I Have a Dream speech during a 1963 rally in Detroit. "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," he said later that year during his famous speech in Washington, D.C. King, who urged nonviolent resistance as a means to protest racial and other human rights injustices, was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, TN.
