June Moon Furniture Adds Commercial Line

"I just think it's really important that we, as Americans, buy local so we support our small businesses," says Berkley shop owner Maureen Popkin, whose new products will be made at factories in central and western Michigan.

June Moon Furniture owner Maureen Popkin has realized a dream: The Berkley businesswoman recently launched her own Michigan-made commercial line. The new line includes chairs, table bases and table tops that feature the same mid-century modern style of the residential products Popkin sells in her Coolidge Highway shop and on its website. Commercial furniture is designed for use in offices, universities, hospitals and architectural firms, among other business locations, Popkin said. "What I'm really excited about is that the line will be made at factories in central and western Michigan," said Popkin, whose background is in the commercial and contract industries. June Moon Furniture Celebrates First Birthday

The shop on Coolidge Highway in Berkley will hold a reception to mark the occasion Thursday evening.

June Moon Furniture in Berkley has had a banner year. The home decor and design shop on Coolidge Highway opened one year ago Thursday and owner Maureen Popkin has since built up a loyal clientele, introduced new furniture lines and spearheaded the launch of the Coolidge Collection of businesses. She will mark the anniversary with a free reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the shop during the Coolidge Collection's monthly First Thursdays, when businesses along the highway stay open late and offer special goodies to entice shoppers. The June Moon reception, which is open to the public, will feature door prizes and refreshments from Butterfly Bake Shoppe and Party Cakes. June Moon Furniture owner Maureen Popkin knew she’d have to start from the bottom and work her way up. “Business can always be better as a startup company, we’re still competing with the big furniture companies around,” said Popkin, a Connecticut native. “But because we offer some unique solutions for customers, people are taking a second and third look at us.” Six months after her grand opening of the little storefront on Coolidge Highway in Berkley, she’s showing sure signs of integrating with the community and making her mark among area businesses.
