Local Police to Take Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs on Saturday

Huntington Woods Public Safety to participate in the national take-back day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27.

The Drug Enforcement Administration has scheduled a National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day for Saturday, April 27. Local police departments, including the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department, will take back unwanted or unused prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. "This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications," a post on the Huntington Woods city web site states. Crossing Guard Needed in Huntington Woods

The Public Safety Department is looking to hire someone who is reliable and good with kids to serve during weekday afternoons outside Burton Elementary School.

The Huntington Woods Public Safety Department is looking to hire someone who is reliable and good with kids to serve as a crossing guard. The guard will be stationed during weekday afternoons outside Burton Elementary School and earn $12.50 per day. Huntington Woods Public Safety Deputy Chief Receives Leadership Recognition

Nicholas Armold recently earned the Franklin M. Kreml Leadership Award, whose goal is to honor "high ethical and professional values and dedication to public service."

Huntington Woods Public Safety Deputy Chief Nicholas Armold recently was selected by his classmates at the the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety to receive a prestigious leadership award. The Franklin M. Kreml Leadership Award was established in 1984 to "recognize and encourage the high ethical and professional values and dedication to public service upon which the Center for Public Safety was founded," according to a Huntington Woods Public Safety press release. Armold and other students in the 10-week School of Police Staff and Command at the center in Evanston, IL, received training on management and technical subjects beginning Sept. 1. Elderly Woman Loses $1,876 in Phone Scam

The Huntington Woods Public Safety Department supplied the following information.

An elderly woman reported to the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department on Dec. 7 that she was the victim a phone scam. The woman, whom the reporting officer noted was accompanied by her adult son, said that approximately 8 p.m. Dec. 6, a man claiming to be her grandson called her home phone. The man asked her to send his attorney money because he had been involved in an accident in the Philippines and instructed her not to contact his father, according to the report. Driver With Concealed Pistol Arrested After Running Red Light

A man was arrested Dec. 3 after running a red light and carrying a concealed pistol with an expired license, according to the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department. The man was driving southbound on Woodward Avenue at 4:38 p.m. when he ran a red light at 11 Mile Road, according to a Huntington Woods Public Safety report. After being stopped, the driver handed the reporting officer his driver's license and a concealed pistol license; he said he was carrying a pistol and his vehicle was a rental, according to the incident report. Switchblade, LSD, Drug Paraphernalia Found in Speeding Driver's Vehicle

A Huntington Woods Public Safety officer reported that he stopped a speeding driver at approximately 1:05 a.m. Nov. 12 on Interstate 696 and discovered a concealed weapon, LSD and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. The driver, who was headed eastbound, passed the officer, who was stationed on an overpass just east of Coolidge Highway, traveling at 85 miles per hour, according to the report. The officer stopped the driver, who had changed lanes without signalling, just east of Woodward Avenue, the report said. The officer reported that when he approached the vehicle and the driver rolled down his window, there was a strong odor of marijuana. The driver told the officer the last time he smoked marijuana was approximately a month ago before …

Customized Men's Mountain Bike Taken From Garage on Borgman

A resident reported Nov. 5 to the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department that a customized bicycle was taken from his garage on Borgman Avenue. The man told the responding officer that he had last seen the men's mountain bike approximately a week prior leaning against the back wall of his garage with a women's bicycle in front of it. The women's bike was still there Nov. 5, the officer wrote in his report. The officer did not observe any damage to the main garage door or the garage entry door and the resident said the detached garage was left open most of the time, according to the report. Property crimes declined from 2010 to 2011 in Berkley and Huntington Woods, according to the annual “Crime in the United States” report the Federal Bureau of Investigation released this week. The largest shift in Berkley from 2010 to 2011 was a decline in larceny-theft from 164 incidents to 124; in Huntington Woods, the most significant change was a decline in burglaries from 9 to 6 cases, according to the FBI. Violent crimes decreased from 13 to 11 in Berkley and increased from 0 to 1 in Huntington Woods, the report states. There was one incident categorized as "murder, nonnegligent manslaughter" in the cities – the death of Detroit resident Terrence Dyer in a fiery three-vehicle accident in March 2011 in Berkley.
