When Do Your Holiday Decorations Go Up, Berkley and Huntington Woods?

After Thanksgiving? After Halloween? How soon is too soon to decorate? Take our poll to weigh in!

Now that Thanksgiving is over, the holiday decorations in Michigan stores are out in full force. Christmas trees, lights, blow-up Menorahs and manger scenes line the aisles already at Home Depot, Target, Walmart and other stores. So when it comes to your holiday decorations, how soon do you start? Whether your tree goes up while the jack-o-lanterns are still on the porch; or if you stick to the nothing-until-after-Thanksgiving rule, tell us: When will you decorate for the holidays?

The Winner of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America Contest Is ...

The creator – and wearer – of the Pirate Carrying a Mermaid Optical Illusion will receive a $5,000 prize for having the most creative and innovative costume.

New Yorker Ashley Playford dressed up as a pirate carrying a mermaid this Halloween. Well, actually, she dressed up as the mermaid. Her creativity has earned her the title of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America and a $5,000 grand prize.   It was Playford's use of an optical illusion that won us over. Take a look at the photo she entered on Peekskill-Cortlandt Patch! Almost 4,000 Patch users entered the contest from Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, with costumes ranging from the Eiffel Tower and Honey Boo Boo to a flower pot and a clever interpretation of "binders full of women." National judges chose one finalist from each Patch state based on who had the most creative and innovative costume (we combined North Carolina and South Carolina for this …

Halloween High Jinks Result in Allegation of Assault

The following information was supplied by the Berkley Public Safety Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The Berkley Public Safety Department is investigating after a teenage trick-or-treater reported that an adult grabbed him and shoved him into a vehicle on Halloween. The trick-or-treater reported at 7:25 p.m. Oct. 31 that a man grabbed him by the arm and shoved him into a truck parked nearby on the 3860 block of Bacon, according to a Public Safety report. The boy and the adult agreed that the trick-or-treater had been taunting the man, who was dressed as horror film character "Jason" and was using a chainsaw to frighten passersby, but after that their stories diverged, the responding officer noted. The teen told the officer the man yelled at him to leave him alone and appeared to have been drinking before the alleged assault. The trick-or-…

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is collecting "Treats for Troops" from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at several area substations. Or, you can ship your candy to Operation Gratitude.

For parents looking for an alternative to their children consuming excessive amounts of candy at Halloween while engaging in a service project with their children, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is accepting Halloween candy as part of its 3rd annual “Treats for Troops” effort to send thanks, encouragement, and sweets to our troops overseas. Sheriff Bouchard also encourages parents and children wishing to participate to include notes (thank you, holiday, etc.) to the troops with the donation. “Treats for Troops is a great way parents can participate in a community service project with their kids while showing our troops we support them back home,” Bouchard …

Art Students Boo-tify Berkley

Berkley Eyewear celebrates Halloween with colorfully painted pumpkins created by Berkley High School class.

In the movies, everyone in a quaint small town pitches in to make holidays special, knitting their community closer together in shared celebration. Things are no different in Berkley this Halloween, where a collaboration between Berkley Eyewear and students at Berkley High School has beautified the exterior of the Coolidge Highway business with colorfully painted pumpkins. Berkley Eyewear co-owner Lisa Gilbert said she got the idea after hearing passersby comment on pumpkins outside her shop. "I started thinking about those movies where small towns get involved in the event and I thought, 'Berkley is a small town!' " So, she asked BHS art teacher Stefanie Coburn if her students would like to decorate more pumpkins to place outside the shop…
