Five Berkley schools were honored Wednesday morning at Oakland Schools in Waterford for their commitment to being environmentally friendly and obtaining Michigan Green School status. During the fourth annual Oakland County Green Schools ceremony, 193 schools were recognized for achieving the designation. In order to receive the Green School status, schools must perform a series of green-friendly activities and then apply for the certification, detailing the projects they have taken on. To obtain the minimum requirements to receive certification, 10 activities following the guidelines must be met throughout the school year. Five schools in the Berkley School District are among 193 in Oakland County being recognized this week for earning the Michigan Green School designation. Representatives of the schools will gather Wednesday morning at Oakland Schools in Waterford to receive an official Michigan Green School flag and a certificate signed by Gov. Rick Snyder. To earn the designation, schools must complete at least 10 of 20 "green" activities. Activities range from paper recycling to garden projects to the use of renewable energy. If they complete more than 10, they may be eligible for "Emerald" or "Evergreen" status. Congrats to our Berkley schools! I remember when my son went to Rogers, a highlight of his day was taking the recycling down to the media center. Being green is just part of the daily culture there. Way to go! more ›
