The presidential candidate is in town for a private event hosted by Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday night.
A crowd of about 200 people gathered Wednesday afternoon outside the Troy Marriott hotel on Big Beaver Road to rally in protest of visiting Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Romney is in Troy for a private fundraiser hosted by Gov. Rick Snyder at the hotel. Protesters carried signs and waved at motorists along Big Beaver, many of whom were honking as they passed by. "We're here to support Barack Obama," said Jeff Klayo of Mt. Clemens, who attended the rally with two fellow UAW members. "He stands for the little guys... The working class." Liz Ratzloff of Ann Arbor attended the rally and wore the official "Pillamina" mascot costume for Planned Parenthood. "I'm here sporting Pillamina because Romney doesn't support low-cost …

Residents and city officials are collaborating on a new family event to ensure the annual Fourth of July celebration fireworks aren't cut.
In efforts to keep Huntington Woods’ fireworks bursting over Rackham Golf Course this year, city residents and officials are teaming up to host a 5K fundraiser. The inaugural event, Run/Walk/BOOM!!!, will be a one-mile walk and 5k run June 30 near the Huntington Woods Recreation Center. The effort may be what saves the fireworks from being a memory rather than a long-standing tradition, officials say. “The tradition of fireworks as the closing event of our city’s annual Independence Day celebration began in 1972. But due to budget constraints, the city considered eliminating the fireworks last year until the Huntington Woods Men’s Club made a significant financial contribution,” Mayor Ron Gillham said in a statement. To pay for the …

Students, families, teachers and neighbors chipped in during the last month to raise money for an outdoor park in memory of first grade teacher Maureen Simon, who died last year.
Burton Elementary School students have rallied together to raise more than $30,000 for a special memorial to be built. As Friends of Burton Community Park plan to replace the very weathered wooden play structure outside of Burton Elementary, the students did their part to raise funds to build an outdoor classroom in honor of Maureen Simon, a first grade teacher who died suddenly last year. “Everyone was so passionate about this memorial campaign, innovating fundraising ideas and motivating each other to reach the target,” Maribeth Krehbiel, principal of Burton Elementary School, said in the press release. “Maureen’s unexpected passing hit our school community very hard. The outdoor classroom project has proven a healthy way to help cope …

Local churches collaborated for Sunday event, which raised about $9,000 for a total of more than $160,000 and counting over the years.
Thanks to the work of churches in Berkley and elsewhere in the state over the weekend, Michigan continues to be the leader in the United States raising money for Church World Service and battling hunger. “The 22nd annual CROP Walk was a great success,” said the Rev. Peter Moore of Greenfield Presbyterian Church in Berkley. “About 80 walkers and another 25 volunteers took part. Many of all different ages walked (and) walkers also included quite a few of the four-legged variety.” The family fundraiser on Sunday offered 5 mile and 1 mile routes. The walk began and ended at Greenfield with checkpoints at First United Methodist Church, Cana Lutheran and Our Lady of La Salette. Moore said Water to Wine, the praise band from Cana Lutheran, …

Despite budget issues, the community's schools prove to be strong with award-winning programs and nationally honored students.
Berkley Schools have witnessed a phenomenal year in music education. The student musicians, directors and staff have been honored for their musical performances and overall quality of the music programs in several ways recently. Both brand new recognitions and honors that Berkley schools secure year after year can be found in the long list of 2011-12 accomplishments. Music education has been a part of the curriculum that Berkley schools have made sure to keep strong, said Mary Beth Fitzpatrick, director of Curriculum, Technology, Assessment and Grants for the Berkley School District. "Despite very challenging times for K-12 state of Michigan public school budgets, the Berkley School District stays focused on the whole child, preserving our…

The Berkley Instrumental Boosters event to raise money to support the community schools' award-winning programs.
Just in time to help local residents sport a shiny clean ride for the changing season, the Berkley Instrumental Boosters (BIB) is hosting its annual car wash next weekend. The car wash will take place 9 a.m.-3 p.m. May 12 in the Berkley High School north parking lot to raise money in support of the elementary, middle and high school band and orchestra programs. Gordy Oliva, president of BIB, said that even though state funding is shrinking, he’s counting on participation in the program to continue growing. “In the six years that I've been involved, I haven't seen this much excitement from the students or the parents,” he said a news release. “We appreciate all the support from our community and administration.” Donations will be accepted …

Though he's never gotten to meet or thank the donor family that helped save his life, Mike Roman hopes to make them proud this summer.
Berkley’s Mike Roman has the bowling game of a lifetime coming up. The 55-year-old man preparing for his spot in the mixed doubles and singles bowling games on Team Michigan in the summer athletic event he’s registered for. Sure, the ’74 Berkley High School graduate is a solid bowler, and has been since his younger years. If fact, he’s been bowling since he was just 3 years old and had an average of 185 in his last league during the year 2000. But this game will be about showing off more than skill. Roman will be showing the world, and himself, that he’s a strong, healthy and very proud heart transplant recipient during his first time participating in the Transplant Games of America. “The Transplant Games of America is an opportunity to do…

Berkley Athletics fundraiser on Friday also includes a home gym system, $500 cash and Grill Master as just a few of the Super Grand Prize items.
The annual Tin Can Auction will return to Berkley High School this Friday for the 13th year. This Berkley Bear Athletic Boosters fundraiser will run 5-10 p.m. and is free to attend. The event includes food, family activities and of course the much-anticipated auction. Here’s how it works: Tickets for the auction cost 25 cents each for General Prize, $1 for Grand Prize items and $5 for Super Grand Prize items in the auction. Guests drop as many of their tickets as they’d like in the tin can next to their coveted item and let the evening unfold. Tin Can Auction Chairwoman Lisa Baker gave a sneak peek at some of the auction items this year: “What is unique about our TCA is there is something for everybody — children, adults, families, etc.,” …

Add a pancake breakfast, wine tasting and an evening with The Chapin Family to your weekend plans.
Looking for things to do this weekend? Here are three events happening around the area over the next few days, all of which support a great cause and offer fantastic entertainment and good eats (or drinks!) On Friday evening, join The Chapin Family, Tom Chapin & Friends, Jen Chapin and The Chapin Sisters at the WCS Performing Arts Center in Sterling Heights to benefit Hope Center in Macomb — the largest client-choice food pantry in Macomb County. The concert begins at 8 p.m. and includes a special taxi ride through the catalogue of songs that made Harry famous. He is remembered as a songwriter (with classics like "Cat’s in the Cradle," "Taxi" and "Circle") who did humanitarian work for anti-hunger agencies. His family continues on his work…
