Hundreds Rally Outside Troy Marriott Before Romney Fundraiser Event

The presidential candidate is in town for a private event hosted by Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday night.

A crowd of about 200 people gathered Wednesday afternoon outside the Troy Marriott hotel on Big Beaver Road to rally in protest of visiting Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Romney is in Troy for a private fundraiser hosted by Gov. Rick Snyder at the hotel. Protesters carried signs and waved at motorists along Big Beaver, many of whom were honking as they passed by. "We're here to support Barack Obama," said Jeff Klayo of Mt. Clemens, who attended the rally with two fellow UAW members. "He stands for the little guys... The working class." Liz Ratzloff of Ann Arbor attended the rally and wore the official "Pillamina" mascot costume for Planned Parenthood. "I'm here sporting Pillamina because Romney doesn't support low-cost …

Huntington Woods Hopes Inaugural Run/Walk/BOOM!!! Will Keep Fireworks Going

Residents and city officials are collaborating on a new family event to ensure the annual Fourth of July celebration fireworks aren't cut.

In efforts to keep Huntington Woods’ fireworks bursting over Rackham Golf Course this year, city residents and officials are teaming up to host a 5K fundraiser. The inaugural event, Run/Walk/BOOM!!!, will be a one-mile walk and 5k run June 30 near the Huntington Woods Recreation Center. The effort may be what saves the fireworks from being a memory rather than a long-standing tradition, officials say. “The tradition of fireworks as the closing event of our city’s annual Independence Day celebration began in 1972. But due to budget constraints, the city considered eliminating the fireworks last year until the Huntington Woods Men’s Club made a significant financial contribution,” Mayor Ron Gillham said in a statement. To pay for the …

The outdoor classroom project has proven a healthy way to help cope …

The 55-year-old man preparing for his spot in the mixed doubles and singles bowling games on Team Michigan in the summer athletic event he’s registered for.
