Thanksgiving and Christmas Day also are among the 10 national holidays on which the state permits fireworks use.
While Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day may not be considered "fireworks holidays" by everyone, all are included on the list of national holidays for which the use of these colorful explosives is permitted by state law. Under Michigan's controversial fireworks law, citizens can ignite, discharge and use consumer fireworks the day before, day of and day after a national holiday, including Veteran's Day on Sunday, Nov. 11. The penalty for violating this ordinance is a $500 fine and/or 90 days in jail. The 10 national holidays recognized by the law include: Many state residents and city leaders – including those in Berkley and Huntington Woods – have expressed frustration with the Fireworks Safety Act of 2011. The new rule bans personal fireworks use on all days except those protected by a new state law.
Huntington Woods adopted a new fireworks ordinance and amended another Tuesday night in response to a state law that has resulted in complaints from residents. Huntington Woods' new ordinance, which is modeled on those passed in nearby cities including Oak Park and Ferndale, bans the personal use of fireworks on all days except those protected by the new state law. The amendment updates Section 24-329 of city code, which regulates which fireworks may be possessed and used, to reference the new state law instead of the Michigan Penal Code that has been repealed. A petition to reverse the Fireworks Safety Act of 2011 gains signatures as Berkley works to craft a proposed ordinance in response to the law.
A new Michigan law that makes it easier to buy fireworks and limits restrictions on their use has prompted individuals and municipalities, including Berkley, to make noise of their own. A petition to repeal the Fireworks Safety Act of 2011 – which was designed to increase revenue to the state and encourage citizens to buy consumer fireworks in Michigan rather than elsewhere – is gaining momentum at the same time Berkley is working to craft its own ordinance. "The (law's) result has been a drastic increase in the amount and violence of private fireworks displays all over the state of Michigan, thereby endangering people, pets and property. It is not worth the additional revenue," West Bloomfield resident Brad Lang wrote in a letter to …

The city makes "lemonade out of lemons" after a severe thunderstorm Wednesday forced the cancellation of Scotia Park festivities including a Sun Messengers concert and the Men's Club fireworks raffle drawing, which has been rescheduled.
Die-hard fireworks fans navigated the steamy, darkened streets of Huntington Woods with flashlights Wednesday night as they made their way to watch the annual display over Rackham Golf Course after a day of sweltering heat, calamitous storms and power outages. A severe thunderstorm whipped through Huntington Woods earlier Wednesday evening, battering the area with powerful winds and hail and knocking out power to 2,151 utility customers in the city, according to DTE's outage map. Evening festivities at Scotia Park, including a concert by the Sun Messengers and the Men's Club's fireworks raffle drawing, were canceled due to the weather. A severe thunderstorm that struck the area Wednesday evening left hail, downed wires and fallen trees in its wake and forced the cancellation of some Fourth of July events in the city.
A severe thunderstorm whipped through Huntington Woods and Berkley on Wednesday evening, battering the area with powerful winds and hail and knocking out power to thousands of customers. DTE's outage map showed 2,152 customers were without power as of 12:10 a.m. in Huntington Woods. DTE reported a single outage in Berkley as of that time. "The only place where there is power is on the south end of town," Huntington Woods City Manager Alex Allie said Wednesday night. "It looks like a very isolated storm." He added that major trees are down in the city. One of them crashed onto Jeremy and Kisha Verdusco's roof and on top of power lines in their back yard in the 10100 block of Elgin. "I was grilling underneath the open garage door (in the …

Even a downpour couldn't douse the fun Tuesday night at Scotia Park in Huntington Woods.
A robust, umbrella-toting crowd turned out Tuesday evening for Huntington Woods' inaugural Adult Battle of the Bands in Scotia Park in defiance of a downpour. Seven bands duked it out during the event, which was co-sponsored by Berkley Music Co. and Oakland County Parks & Recreation, with Soul Quest taking home top honors. The spoils? Bragging rights and the headline gig during the city's July 31 Concert in the Park. The first 15-minute set kicked off shortly after 6 p.m., but thunderstorms prompted a brief break after the second set. No matter though, the crowd just popped open their umbrellas, donned their rain jackets and waited it out. "With the weather, it's a little bizarre," said resident John Potter, who also competed in the …
