UPDATED: Fire Ravages Berkley Home; Family Escapes Unharmed

A dryer malfunction could have caused the Saturday night blaze, which remains under investigation, according to the Berkley Public Safety Department.

Updated, 1:45 p.m. Monday: Berkley Public Safety Sgt. Pete Kelly said all five members of a family that was home Saturday night when a fire broke out at their house on Catalpa escaped safely. "There were no injuries," he said of the parents and three children. The west side of the home's basement was fully engulfed in flames, which already had spread through the walls when officers arrived on the scene, according to Kelly. The Berkley Public Safety Department received assistance fighting the fire from the Beverly Hills and Oak Park Public Safety Departments, he added. "Some of our activities at the scene were hampered by the cold weather," Kelly said. Burn patterns suggest the fire could have been caused by a malfunction with the family's …

No one was seriously injured in a house fire Wednesday in the 2200 block of Cummings, according to the Berkley Public Safety Department. The department responded to a 911 call at 3:52 p.m. after a fire started in the upper floor of the bungalow, BPS Director Richard Eshman said. BPS Sgt. The son, who called 911 and got his mother out of the house, sustained a small burn, Kelly said. "The fire was coming out both sides of the house from the windows and melted the vinyl siding on the houses next door," Eshman said. "(Officers) cut a hole in the roof, …

Tractor Trailer Fire Shuts Down Westbound I-696 near Woodward

No one was hurt in the late morning incident on Thursday and the cause of the fire is unknown, the Royal Oak Fire Department reports.

A tractor trailer caught fire while traveling west on I-696 around 10:45 a.m. Thursday, shutting down the freeway between the Campbell/Hilton exit and Woodward. Sgt. Brian Gothard of the Royal Oak Fire Department said no one was injured in the incident. The cause was unknown as of mid-day. "It just caught fire as it was driving down the road," Gothard said. The tractor itself was a total loss, he said. Police and fire departments were on the scene and waiting for a crew to handle a HAZMAT situation, as the truck was leaking diesel fuel. "We've got that contained we're just waiting for a clean-up crew to come and take care of it," Gothard said Thursday afternoon. Berkley Formalizes Pact With Highland Park Fire Department

Officials seek to temper concerns about the mutual aid agreement, under which Berkley will continue to assist during times of "inordinate need," as well as receive hands-on training during active fires in the Wayne County city.

The Berkley City Council formalized a longstanding but controversial mutual aid agreement between the Public Safety Department and the Highland Park Fire Department during its meeting Monday night at City Hall. The pact will allow Berkley to assist Highland Park during times of "inordinate need" as it does with other communities throughout Oakland County, as well as receive hands-on training during active fires in the Wayne County city and assistance with events such as the Woodward Dream Cruise or should there be a major fire in Berkley, Public Safety Director Richard Eshman said. But critics have expressed concern about the agreement. "I have nothing against Highland Park," said lifelong Berkley resident Rick Stuber, who also serves as a…

Pleasant Ridge to Consider Fire Agreement With Berkley

One of several items on tonight's Pleasant Ridge City Commission agenda that would clear the way for a public safety collaboration between the cities.

Berkley and Pleasant Ridge have begun discussion of a possible public safety collaboration and those talks could move another step forward when the Pleasant Ridge city commission meets at 7:30 tonight. Pleasant Ridge, which has its own police force, has contracted fire services through Ferndale for the last 88 years. But, that would change if Berkley and Pleasant Ridge decide to form a single public safety department. A public safety department consists of officers who are trained in both police and fire protection services. The Pleasant Ridge commission's Tuesday meeting agenda includes several items that could clear the way for a public safety partnership with Berkley, including: During a meeting last month, the Berkley council passed a …
