Reproductions of masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts will be displayed this summer throughout Berkley as part of the fourth annual Inside|Out program. The city is among 25 Metro area communities, including Huntington Woods, that will feature Inside|Out outdoor art installations this year. Berkley Assistant to the City Manager Darchelle Strickland Love said the DIA has confirmed the following installation sites and that the works of art will be announced May 8. The city also is awaiting confirmation for an installation at the Berkley Farm Stand, Strickland Love said. The installations will remain on display until September. Reproductions of five artworks from the Detroit Institute of Arts will be displayed this summer throughout Huntington Woods as part of the fourth annual Inside|Out program. The city is among 25 Metro area communities, including Berkley, that will feature Inside|Out outdoor art installations this year. The 2012 approval of a millage to help support the museum "was an amazing statement on regionalism," DIA chief operating officer Annmarie Erickson said recently.
Regionalism was the word of the day recently when the Detroit Institute of Arts announced which suburban communities will host Inside|Out installations this spring and summer. Berkley and Huntington Woods were among the 25 communities selected to host reproductions of the museum's masterpieces as part of the 2013 program, which will be the first since a millage to help support the DIA was passed in August. Voters in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties approved a tax of 0.2 mills for the next 10 years to help cover the museum's operating costs. The Detroit Institute of Arts has selected Berkley and Huntington Woods among the 25 Metro area communities that will feature Inside|Out outdoor art installations this spring and summer. "Now in its fourth year, Inside|Out brings reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA’s collection to the streets of metro Detroit," a DIA press release said. "Inside|Out aims to connect with audiences outside the museum walls in places where they live, work and play." After tri-county voters passed the DIA millage in the election yesterday, the Detroit Insititue of Arts wants to make sure that residents get their money's worth. “When we announced that we would seek the millage, we pledged that if it were to pass we would provide free admission to residents of all three counties. We are immediately following through on that pledge," said Graham W. J. Beal, DIA director, in a press release. I have lived in SE Michigan for all but 6 1/2 years of my life. I've lived in Huntington Woods for 36 years. For the past 12 years I've been a Huntington Woods City Commissioner. Most recently I've been working along with other nearby elected officials to bring rapid transit to Oakland county and to make it easier and faster to go anywhere along the 22 mile Woodward corridor from the Detroit River to Pontiac. I recently was elected Vice Chair of the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, our 7 county regional planning agency that serves 4.7 million residents and brings all of the regions governments together. Two millage requests will appear on the Aug. 7 ballots of all Oakland County voters.
After Oakland County voters have nominated their picks for local, county and state offices Aug. 7, they will be asked to vote on two countywide millage proposals. SMART (Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation) and the Oakland County Art Institute Authority both are asking for tax dollars. SMART's .59 mills is up for a two-year renewal, while the art institute millage introduces a new tax to benefit the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) for 10 years. Although the top portion of the primary ballot is partisan, meaning voters must select all Republican or all Democratic candidates, the proposal section is separate. The Detroit Institute of Arts will offer free admission to any visitor who wears a mustache – real or fake – from Friday through Sunday during regular museum hours. The promotion celebrates the eccentric appearance of Salvador Dalí, whose painting Soft Construction with Boiled Beans is currently on view in the DIA’s exhibition Five Spanish Masterpieces. This weekend, visitors can enjoy a variety of museum programs, including The Dalí Project – a puppet performance that explores Dalí’s embrace of the subconscious through various forms of puppetry – presented by Puppet Junction. I agree with you, Virginia. If I was a resident of one of these communities, voted to send my taxes to the DIA and the zoo, and then found out that the city was keeping it, I'd refuse to vote for other millages.
