Christmas is over and, if you had a real tree, you may be scratching your head and wondering what to do with it. Luckily, Berkley and Huntington Woods residents have more than one option for recycling their Christmas trees. [How long will you leave your Christmas tree up? Leave a comment!] Huntington Woods residents can leave their trees out for pickup on Mondays, along with other materials for chipping, Public Works manager Claire Galed said. "The chips go to (the Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority) to be mixed in with other compostable materials. We do ask that residents remove all ornaments and tinsel," she said. Jews, Muslims Volunteer on Christmas, Give Christians a Break
Mitzvah Day is so popular this year that there is a wait list for volunteers.
Mitzvah Day is when hundreds of volunteers from Metro Detroit pitch in to make Christmas a brighter day for their neighbors. Organized by the Jewish Community Relations Council, Mitzvah Day started about 20 years ago, said co-chair Micki Grossman, of Farmington Hills. She said it started with the idea of volunteering around the community every month at places like nursing homes and hospitals. "Then someone came up with the idea that on Christmas Day, as Jewish people, we don't have anything to do," said Grossman, who has been co-chair of Mitzvah Day for six or seven years and before that a volunteer and site coordinator. Pickup will be pushed back one day in both cities due to Christmas on Tuesday.
Waste collection in Berkley and Huntington Woods will be delayed this week due to the Christmas holiday Tuesday. Recycling and trash pickup in Huntington Woods will be delayed one day due to Christmas, according to the Public Works Department. Collection will be Wednesday, Dec. 26. Remember to report your recycling for the Recyclebank and SC Johnson Green Choices Recycling Challenge! Collection in Berkley for both Tuesday and Friday also will be delayed one day, according to the City of Berkley.
