"I don't think I've stopped crying for the last two weeks," says owner Dawn Schwanke, who plans to focus on her family after the beloved bakery closes Dec. 22.
December will be a bittersweet month for Butterfly Bake Shoppe owner Dawn Schwanke, who plans to close the popular Berkley bakery so she can spend more time with her family. Butterfly Bake Shoppe's last day in operation will be Dec. 22 and Schwanke, a Berkley resident and mother of five, said her business plans in the new year remain up in the air. "The straw that broke the camel's back is the day both girls were home sick and I had to leave them home alone," Schwanke said of her daughters who are 9 and 12. Berkley bakery celebrates Fat Tuesday with paczki and other sweet treats.
On any given day, the Butterfly Bake Shoppe is a popular Berkley destination for sweet delights. But on Fat Tuesday, the door swings a little more often as customers rush in for their paczki fix. "I'm stopping on my way in to work," said Rosalynn Simpson of Oak Park. "I drive by here everyday and couldn't resist it today for paczki." Butterfly Bake Shoppe owner Dawn Schwanke knows Fat Tuesday is a big day and had 75 dozen paczki in a variety of flavors ready to sell to customers throughout the day. While some people express their creativity through writing, art or music, Berkley resident and mother of five Dawn Schwanke has a different, decidedly sweeter medium: cake. Whether it’s a birthday cake for one of her children or custom sugar cookies for one of her clients, Schwanke is quick to incorporate the theme for each event as she designs, bakes and decorates intricately detailed treats to match any party theme. “Everything for me has to have a theme.
