When I inquired as a Berkley/Rogers parent, I was told that Burton's building is full with neighborhood children. The building, like all the others in the district, allows students from within the district and then opens to school of choice outside the district like the other schools in BSD but priority must always be given to serve children who actually would attend because of their neighborhood…   more ›

Board of Education President Celebrated as Passionate Education Advocate

Marc Katz, whose term ends Dec. 31, will be leaving the Berkley School District board after 22 years of service. He was honored during a packed reception and recognition ceremony Monday night at the Avery Center in Oak Park.

OAK PARK — Passion was the keyword Monday night at the Avery Center, where a standing-room-only crowd gathered to honor departing Board of Education President Marc Katz. Katz, whose term ends Dec. 31, will be leaving the Berkley School District board after 22 years of service and was praised as an example of why local boards are valuable. "I have mixed emotions," Katz said of his impending departure during a reception in his honor before the Board of Education meeting, which was attended by local and state luminaries, educators, administrators, community members and past board members and superintendents. Bid Farewell to Board of Education President

Marc Katz, whose term ends this month, has served the Berkley School District for 22 years; a public reception in his honor will be held at 6:30 tonight before the regularly scheduled 7 p.m. Board of Education meeting at the Avery Center in Oak Park.

OAK PARK – The Berkley School District invites the public to bid farewell to Board of Education President Marc Katz during a reception at 6:30 tonight before the regularly scheduled 7 p.m. Board of Education meeting at the Avery Center. Katz, whose term ends this month, has served on the Board of Education for 22 years. In May, he told Berkley Patch that he is ready to step aside and give someone else the opportunity to lead: "I've always said being on the board is not a lifetime job." Katz has said he will continue his 28-year career with Kaplan Professional Education, where he conducts seminars for stockbrokers and insurance industry professionals. He also may pursue an opening on the Intermediate School District board as of July 2012. …

Board of Education Honors Outgoing Berkley Mayor

Former Berkley School District teacher Marilyn Stephan's term will end Nov. 21 when Phil O'Dwyer is sworn in as mayor.

OAK PARK – The Berkley Board of Education honored outgoing Berkley Mayor Marilyn Stephan, a former Berkley School District teacher, during its meeting Monday night at the Avery Center. Stephan, a Berkley resident since 1957, attended the meeting with her husband George, a Berkley High School graduate and city resident since 1940, and received accolades from Superintendent Michael Simeck. "We wanted to say publicly how much we've enjoyed working with you," Simeck said, citing some of the mayor's accomplishments during her years of public service to Berkley, including: Stephan said she was most proud of helping to establish a standing Environmental Advisory Committee during her time as mayor and that the most difficult part of the job was …

Election: Meet Your Board of Education Candidates

Contenders tell Berkley Patch about their experience, personal background, inspiration and priorities if elected. If you'd like to find out more, a Board of Education meet-the-candidates forum will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Avery Center.

Voters will go to the polls Nov. 8 to elect three respresentatives to the Berkley School District Board of Education, and Berkley Patch has the scoop on the candidates. Current board Vice President Paul Ellison, along with Paul Honkala and Ronald Justice, are running to fill two six-year terms. Board of Education President Marc Katz will not seek re-election; his term ends in December. Mitchell Moses, an interim board member by appointment, and Melissa Lampela are running to fill one partial term ending Dec. 31, 2015. The Board of Education in July appointed Moses to fill a seat vacated by Trustee Ryan O'Gorman, whose family moved out of the district. Candidates File for November Elections

A mix of incumbents and new faces will contend for positions on Berkley City Council, Huntington Woods City Commission and Berkley School District Board of Education.

The race is officially on for the Nov. 8 general election, when positions on the Berkley City Council, Huntington Woods City Commission and Berkley School District Board of Education will be filled. The filing deadline for candidates in each race was 4 p.m. Tuesday and the slates include incumbents and new faces. Following are the names of candidates who filed with the Elections Division of the Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds Office for November races in Berkley and Huntington Woods. (Vote for not more than one; two-year term) Mayor Marilyn Stephan did not file to run in the November election, which leaves O'Dwyer as the sole candidate. Board of Education Appointee Hopes to Offer 'Fresh, Insightful Perspective'

Mitchell Moses, who was selected Tuesday night to fill a seat vacated by trustee Ryan O'Gorman, said he plans to run in the November general election.

The Berkley School District Board of Education appointed Mitchell Moses to fill a seat vacated by trustee Ryan O'Gorman during a special session Tuesday night at the Avery Center in Oak Park. "I'm very excited about being on the school board and starting to help the district," Moses said Wednesday, adding that he hopes to bring a "fresh, insightful perspective" to the board. O'Gorman announced June 7 that he would step down from the board June 30. O'Gorman's family purchased a home outside the district, which disqualified him from serving as a trustee.
