Graduation Gifts 101: Students Share Ideas on What Works, What Doesn't

Come to find out, the secret of great gift-giving for graduations isn’t as elusive as it seems.

With 255 proud new Berkley High School graduates in the community, it’s a time of celebration – and wondering what kind of gift to give. Giving a personal and practical gift to students who have just graduated high school can be a tricky task, but it can also be an extremely rewarding one if you can find the perfect little something to go a long way. So we asked graduating seniors to give us their opinion on what the best gifts to receive really are. (You might be surprised to find out that cash wasn’t at the top of all of their lists, though each of the three graduates did mention it). “I think the best graduation gifts are things that are either A. super practical or B. super nice (or) cool,” explained Rachel Pernick of Huntington Woods…

Gift Cards to a local grocery store PLUS a little cash are some of the gifts I have given and have been welcomed. Also a laundry basket with some towels/washclothes & detergent and dryer sheets with a roll of quarters was another one.   more ›

Berkley High School Class of 2012 Graduates

Commencement was marked by smiles, hugs, laughter and cheering on graduates as they claimed their much-deserved diplomas. Please share your photos here.

Berkley High School seniors had much to be proud about Thursday evening as they assembled into Baldwin Pavilion at Meadow Brook in Rochester Hills. The warm, sunny weather made for a perfect outdoor ceremony as more than 250 graduates made their way across the stage to receive their diplomas. A sea of burgundy and blue caps and gowns — or as Valedictorian Vicky Cheung likened them to, “Snuggies and one-size-fits-most parallelograms” on their heads — and students smiled, laughed and cheered as the ceremony dedicated to their achievements and future successes unfolded. Superintendent Michael Simeck put their accomplishment of graduating high school into perspective by taking them on a humorous trip down memory lane. It started 13 years ago, …

BHS Graduation Speech: Rachel Pernick

'I salute you, O Class, I salute you with pride. You’re brilliant! You’re daring! You’re lively and kind!'

Following is the speech Berkley High School senior Rachel Pernick delivered Thursday evening at BHS commencement: Salute to the Class of 2012, with lines from Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go. Out there things can happen and frequently do to people as brainy and footsy as you. And when things start to happen, don't worry.  Don't stew. Just go right along. You'll start happening too. OH! THE PLACES YOU'LL GO! You’ll be stirring up potions! And turning …

BHS Graduation Speech: Rachel Sabbath

'Years from now, we will want to share with our grandchildren, like Grandma in Parenthood did, the things we tried, the times we won, lost, succeeded, failed and the roller coasters we rode. All of that starts now.'

Following is the speech Berkley High School senior Rachel Sabbath delivered Thursday evening at BHS commencement: Good evening. Life has been described as a lot of things by a lot of people… Ralph Waldo Emerson called it “an experiment”, life is “like riding a bicycle” according to Albert Einstein, Truman Capote called it “a moderately good play with a poorly written third act”, and John Lennon said “it is what happens to you while you’re making other plans”. These were all brilliant people and very creative analogies. But my favorite analogy for life was made by a batty old grandma in the 80s movie Parenthood. It’s a simple idea but it transcends any milestone, mid-life crisis, or other big event. Grandma says of a roller coaster, “it was…

BHS Graduation Speech: Vicky Cheung

'Today is really just another day, a random Thursday no less, yet to us, it could very well be one of the most important days of our lives.'

Following is the speech Berkley High School senior Vicky Cheung delivered Thursday evening at BHS commencement: Friends, family, faculty … enemies? As we all know, today is an important day. It’s a day for the history books! Not only is today our graduation, it is Liam Neeson’s — Qui Gon Jinn, Aslan the Lion, and Ra’s al Ghul (no other explanation needed)—60th birthday. The funny thing about graduation is that, just like birthdays, it is pretty arbitrary in nature. Today is really just another day, a random Thursday no less, yet to us, it could very well be one of the most important days of our lives. If we take the time to really think about it, graduation is a fairly strange ritual. I mean, up until now, we’ve worked our entire lives for…
