Berkley Bans Overnight Parking Near Parks

Signs that indicate the prohibition between 2 and 6 a.m. were erected last week to keep spaces clear for events, as well as for snow disposal during major storms, the Public Safety Department says.

Berkley has banned overnight parking in spaces reserved for public parks, according to the Public Safety Department. Signs that indicate parking is not allowed between 2 and 6 a.m. were erected last week to keep spaces clear for visitors to the city's parks, as well as for snow disposal in the event of major storms, Public Safety Deputy Director Robert North said. North said the department has received complaints from neighbors about people using the spaces to park boats, semi-cabs and extra cars for extended periods. "Taxpayers pay for those spaces to provide parking for events," he said. "They also are used as a place to dump snow during big snowfalls." Whether you've done it for 5 years or 20 years, I don't understand why someone would expect to be able to park in a public lot overnight. If anything, you should have to pay a daily fee to park in a public lot. Quite the entitlement mentality.   more ›

Vehicle Hits Crossing Guard Outside Anderson Middle School

The man was hospitalized with non-life threatening injures after the incident Friday morning, according to the Berkley Public Safety Department.

A crossing guard was hospitalized Friday morning after a vehicle struck him outside Anderson Middle School in Berkley. Berkley Public Safety Department Deputy Director Robert North said the man was hit at approximately 8 a.m. and taken to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak with non-life threatening injuries. The motorist involved in the incident, who was not injured, was issued citations, North said. "We had an unfortunate accident this morning at Anderson Middle School as our crossing guard was hit by a car," principal Vince Gigliotti wrote in a note to parents. Resident Finds Damaged, Stolen Van

A resident reported at 8:24 a.m. Dec. 4 that his vehicle was stolen from a parking space in the 2880 block of Cummings. The man said he parked and locked his gold 2000 Grand Voyager Chrysler van at 8:30 p.m. Dec. 3 and discovered it was missing the next morning, according to a Berkley Public Safety report. The man told the department he had both sets of keys to the vehicle. Shortly after filing the report, the man contacted the department to say he had located the van in the 2840 block of Thomas, according to the report. The responding officer noted damage to the driver's door lock and the steering column and that the ignition had been broken out. Berkley Public Safety Department Promotes Andrew Hadfield to Sergeant

The move is a key part of the department's succession plan, Director Richard Eshman says.

Berkley Public Safety Officer Andrew Hadfield recently was promoted to the rank of sergeant, with an outpouring of support from his colleagues and family. BPS Director Richard Eshman praised Hadfield's professionalism and dedication to community service when he made the announcement during the Nov. 19 City Council meeting. Hadfield has worked his way up since joining the department as a dispatcher 12 years ago, with the following accomplishments, Eshman noted. "He has served admirably for 8 years as an officer," Eshman said. "His work ethic and enthusiasm led to three Mothers Against Drunk Driving awards." Catalytic Converter Taken From Vehicle Parked in Driveway

A resident reported to the Berkley Public Safety Department that the catalytic converter was removed from her vehicle while it was parked in her driveway in the 1400 block of West Boulevard the morning of Nov. 23. The woman reported that she parked her vehicle at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 21 when she returned from work and when she took the car out at 11 a.m. Nov. 23, her exhaust was very loud. Her husband looked under the vehicle and discovered the converter was missing, according to the report. There are no suspects in the incident and, as of Nov. 23, no similar incidents had been reported recently, the report said. Vehicle Window Smashed, GPS Devices Taken

A woman reported that someone used a golf club to smash a passenger side window of her vehicle on Nov. 18 while it was parked in a driveway in the 2220 block of Columbia in Berkley. The woman reported to the Berkley Public Safety Department that the incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. and that a GPS device on her dashboard and another that had been purchased as a gift and left on the floor were taken from the locked vehicle. There are no known suspects, according to the Public Safety report. Accident That Shut 12 Mile, Coolidge Intersection Under Investigation

A man was hospitalized and released after a single-vehicle crash Saturday that sheered off a utility pole at the corner, according to the Berkley Public Safety Department.

The  Berkley Public Safety Department is investigating an accident that forced the closure of the 12 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway intersection for several hours Saturday. A man who was driving southbound on Coolidge Highway at 4:30 p.m. was involved in a single-vehicle crash in which he struck a utility pole near the intersection's northwest corner, according to BPS Detective Sgt. Mike Crum. "The electric pole was sheered off and we were afraid it was going to fall into Coolidge," and could cause death or serious injury to people in the area, he said. The corner was closed for several hours while DTE Energy shut off power and installed a new utility pole, according to Crum. The driver was hospitalized and released after the accident, …

Valuables Taken from Locked Vehicles

Two residents reported to the Berkley Public Safety Department that valuables were taken from their locked vehicles in Berkley. There are no suspects in either case, both of which are under investigation. A resident in the 2420 block of Oakshire reported that he parked his work van in his driveway at approximately 5 p.m. Oct. 31 and when he returned to the vehicle at approximately 12:45 a.m. Nov. 4, the driver's side door was not fully closed. The man reported that the driver-side seat was pushed up and clothing that had been between the front seats was thrown on the passenger seat. Hubcaps Taken from Matrix Motors Lot

The owner of Matrix Motors reported to the Berkley Public Safety Department that two hubcaps were taken from a wrecked Cadillac parked outside the 11 Mile Road business. The man reported that at 2 p.m. Nov. 8, he informed a man who inquired about buying the hubcaps that they were not for sale. According to the report, the owner discovered at 8 p.m. Nov. 9 that the hubcaps were missing. The case is under investigation.
