A look at a busy day in downtown Berkley, including the art show, Coolidge Rocks concert, Lids 4 Kids and opening of Atomic Dawg.
Thousands of people from around the area flooded into downtown Berkley on Saturday to take in all the sights, sounds and tastes of the 11th annual Berkley Art Bash. With more than 115 artists from Michigan on display, live music, local eateries on hand and friends and families buzzing about, Berkley came alive under the near 90-degree and sunny weather. There were also plenty of kids' activities to check out. The Converse family from Berkley spent the morning at the Lids 4 Kids event hosted at Berkley Fire Department. Three-year-old Kaylee and 9-year-old Heather picked out free helmets and road their bikes around the parking lot, with parents Karen and Randall close behind. “We come every year and we love it,” Karen said. “We like to show …
Heather Sennabaum from Goodrich happened upon 6,000 zippers and initially thought she was crazy to make such an investment. It all paid off in the end.
Heather Sennabaum of Goodrich says it was the “pure simplicity” of zippers that she fell in love with, leading her to turn a quirky passion into an expressive form of art. The 35-year-old owner of Re-Zipit! will be showcased in the 11th annual Berkley Art Bash for the first time this year, offering her repurposed zipper accessories that she says are “bold yet basic, sophisticated and created for the courageous at heart.” Below she explains how she came to be a connoisseur of zippers and what her work means. Patch: How did your journey as an artist first begin? Sennabaum: My artwork happened as an accident. I have always been "artsy" but have never been totally into art. While working as a therapist, treating substance abusing criminals, I …

We featured some of the artists this week to get a feel for who they are, what they do and what art means to them: Fairgoers can also hang out at the stage where there will be live music playing noon to 5 p.m.: The stores that make up the Coolidge …
Dini Burny of Lake Orion has been a part of the art show from the first year and says it's her children who inspire her popular paintings.
Dini Burny of Lake Orion is no stranger to the Berkley Art Bash. She’s been a showcased artist from the beginning (11 years now) and has made a successful living as an artist after she traded corporate art directing for creating original pieces inspired by being a mother. Burny, 46, makes paintings that are close to the heart, she explained. Paintings like “Mending” and “Unconditional Love” (see them in the attached photos) serve as a testimony for how her art reaches people. The first was bought by a heart surgeon in Australia and Burny says the doctor wrote to her after to let her know it was hung in her office. “It reminds her of how she is able to help her patients,” Burny explained. The latter was made for a woman in California. “She …

These downtown Berkley businesses have big things planned, and next up is a free concert and sidewalk-sale extravaganza Saturday.
For the downtown Berkley businesses owners along Coolidge Highway, life is like a diamond in the rough. The street and storefronts may not be fancy and they certainly stand out from the downtown’s prominent shopping district at 12 Mile, but June Moon Furniture owner Maureen Popkin is determined to lead the way in giving them the TLC she says they deserve. “As I was doing my round of intros in the area, the one thing I noticed that was really missing here was a little unity,” she said about moving into Berkley last fall. “I wanted to have my business here. I thought it would be a really fun place to launch something neat. But we don’t look or feel anything like 12 Mile, though we are part of the downtown area.” With the inspiration of …

West Bloomfield artist Christy Brennan was just a little girl when she bit down into a golden heart pendant to alter it. Her mother was mortified, but for her, it was just the beginning of what she could do with jewelry, she says.
Like most artists, Christy Brennan of West Bloomfield always knew she had the spirit of an artist inside her. “I have always loved shaping metal since I was very little,” she tells customers on her B-Side Metalworks Etsy page. “Literally, I took a bite out of a small gold heart charm necklace! My mom was devastated, and I was stunned I could change the shape of the small charm with my teeth. Luckily for my teeth and my clients, I have since moved on to using tools.” That was certainly the moment it all began, but it wasn’t until she got her hands on her very own blow torch that the real magic happened. Since 2010, the now 37-year-old metalsmith has been crafting pendants and charms of all kinds. She’ll be appearing at the Berkley Art Bash …

Berkley resident Kezzie Chudler says if it can be sewn, they'll do it and do it in a gorgeous fabric.
For the women behind Stitch248, there are some things that have an undeniable richness to them. One might say that includes the chocolate and wine that the ladies were enjoying while originally dreaming up their new artisan business. But certainly on the top of that list is a beautiful fabric – what brings all their passions together. Berkley mom of three Kezzie Chudler, 29, her own mother Angela Sharp, 50, of Canton, and their partner Rebecca Sammon, 34, a mom of three in Royal Oak, are the creative minds (and hands) behind Stitch248. They design practical products they believe women want and need, from bags to aprons to clothing and throw pillows. It’s their first year appearing at the Berkley Art Bash and Chudler says they are eager to …
Scott Bruce of Metamora knew he had a special talent four years ago when all his friends wanted to know where he bought the frames he hand-made for his wife.
Scott Bruce of Metamora has many ways to enhance the wood he builds home pieces with. To transform it into a completely unique piece, he chisels, chops, paints and more— but besides his technical skill, he says it’s the passion and thought he puts into his creations that really resonates with customers. “My work continues to evolve as I always try to create slightly out of my comfort zone and push my limits,” he said. This year Bruce, 40, will be returning for a third time to the Berkley Art Bash and he’s looking forward to the “eclectic mix of artists” and “really fun atmosphere.” His pieces start at $35 and run up to $500. (Visit scottallenbruce.com for more of his designs). We asked him to share a little on how he makes his very-…
