Authorities say a 49-year-old Madison Heights man robbed several Oakland County banks, including one in Berkley, since December.
Derrick Dwayne Sebree, a 49-year-old Madison Heights man, was arraigned Thursday in federal court on charges related to Wednesday's bank robbery in Royal Oak and seven others. Sebree faces eight charges of bank robbery under federal law. U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Laurie Michelson ordered him held, pending a detention hearing at 1 p.m. Friday, according to Royal Oak Police. Police said Sebree robbed the TCF Bank located at 1811 Crooks in Royal Oak at about 12:41 p.m. Wednesday, which led to a police pursuit through Berkley, Beverly Hills and Southfield. Royal Oak Police confirmed the arrest of a man on Wednesday who is suspected in a string of bank robberies in Oakland County over the past several months. The arrest came during an attempted robbery at TCF Bank at approximately 12:41 p.m. in Royal Oak, which had been robbed twice in March 2012 by a man wearing a mask. A man believed to be responsible for several bank robberies around Oakland County, including one in Berkley, is suspected of robbing an Independent Bank in Beverly Hills on Tuesday.
Authorities believe a serial bank robber hitting up banks around Oakland County, including on Jan. 28 in Berkley, may be responsible for the Tuesday robbery of a Beverly Hills bank. According to WXYZ, a man robbed the Independent Bank in Beverly Hills — located just south of 14 Mile on Southfield — on Tuesday morning. Contrary to other media reports, it was the only robbery Tuesday in which the man is a suspect, Federal Bureau of Investigation Public Affairs Specialist Simon Shaykhet said Thursday. The suspect wore a black coat, pants and a ski mask during the Tuesday robbery, along with a shirt and tie under his coat, according to authorities. A man who robbed a Royal Oak bank on Friday is believed to be a suspect in five other area robberies, including one in Berkley.
A Royal Oak bank is the latest target of a "serial bank robber," who also is a suspect in a Jan. 28 bank robbery in Berkley, according to Federal Bureau of Investigations officials. On Friday, a man entered the Citizen’s Bank at 800 S. Main St. with a handgun and got away with an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect matches the description of a masked man believed to have robbed several banks in the area, according to FBI spokesperson Simon Shaykhet. Since December, five other banks in Oakland County, including two on Main Street in Royal Oak, have been robbed. Birmingham Police say Friday's robbery of Comerica Bank is similar to several others recently in Oakland County; the Federal Bureau of Investigations has offered a $2,500 cash reward for information leading to the suspect's arrest.
Birmingham Police believe there may be a connection between Friday's robbery of the Comerica Bank on West Maple and several similar robberies in the area, including one Jan. 28 in Berkley. On Friday, a masked man wearing all black robbed the Comerica Bank at 1712 W. Maple Road, police reports state. The man pulled out a gun during the robbery, police say, and walked out with more than $9,000. According to Birmingham Lt. Mike Albrect, the detective in charge of the case, Birmingham Police is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigations to catch the man. The Federal Bureau of Investigations has offered a $2,500 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of a serial bank robber in Oakland County. The FBI says the male suspect, who wore a black mask and escaped on foot Monday, is an "alleged serial armed robber" who could be linked to several other recent bank robberies in Metro Detroit.
The Charter One bank on Woodward Avenue in Berkley was robbed of $6,000 on Monday in what authorities say could be the work of a serial armed robber. The suspect, dressed all in black and wearing a mask that obscured most of his face, was last seen Monday running north from the bank near the North Pointe Medical building, Berkley Public Safety Deputy Director Robert North said Tuesday. The man got away with $6,000, he added. The Royal Oak Police Department assisted in the unsuccessful effort to apprehend the man, as did the Southfield Police Department, which sent a tracker dog that was used to search the nearby neighborhood, North said. The Huntington Woods resident watched the suspect, who was wearing a knit cap and white gloves, enter the building and exit carrying bundled money, with bills blowing away in the breeze, public safety officials says.
The 911 caller who tipped off the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department to a robbery Monday at Chase Bank followed his instincts after he saw a suspicious-looking man enter the building, an official said. The tipster, a Huntington Woods resident, was in the bank parking lot when he noticed a man wearing a knit cap and white gloves go into the building, Lt. Ron Livingston said Tuesday.
