MDEQ Declares Air Quality Action Day

High temperatures, humidity and 'ample sunshine' may drive up ozone levels Friday.

A sunny Friday with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s has triggered the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to issue an Air Quality Action Day for southeast Michigan. "Air quality is expected to erode as southerly winds, increasing temperatures/humidity, and ample sunshine combine to make elevated ozone formation likely," MDEQ spokesperson Jim Haywood wrote in a press release  Thursday. People and businesses should avoid these activities on Air Action days: Everyone is encouraged to car pool, use their bicycles or walk, and delay or combine errands when possible. Active children and adults, and persons with respiratory diseases such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion, the MDEQ advises. Air Quality Alert Issued for Southeast Michigan

Residents are encouraged to use mass transit if possible and to combine errands into a single trip Tuesday.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has declared Tuesday as an Air Quality Action Day throughout Southeast Michigan due to prolonged heat. Residents are encouraged to take a number of steps, including: Rain is possible during the next couple days, but the chances are slim, according to the alert. "The highlight of the weather conditions for this week will be the hot temperatures sticking around right through the 4th of July holiday," the alert says.
