'Competition Breeds Success,' Berkley High School's New Varsity Football Coach Says

BHS special education teacher Chris Sikora – who said he will stress academic achievement, as well as a competitive spirit, among his players – has set his sights on the state playoffs.

Berkley High School's new varsity football head coach Chris Sikora has big plans for the team, both on and off the field. The BHS special education teacher – who recently took over after former head coach Jeff Burnside left to take the head coaching position at Novi High School – said he will stress academic achievement, as well as a competitive spirit. "Competition breeds success," Sikora said. "I don't just want competitors on the field; I want them in the classroom and in life." The mantra is one Sikora, of Rochester Hills, has applied in his own life. "This school is incredible," Sikora said. "I'm really blessed everything has really worked out for me." Red Wings Offer Free Admission to Red vs. White Game

The team's warmups at Compuware Arena in Plymouth are open to public.

While its home venue, Joe Louis Arena, is booked for the North American International Auto Show, the Detroit Red Wings are offering fans a chance to see the team prepare for its lockout-shortened 2013 NHL season in Plymouth. The Red Wings opened training camp Sunday before about 2,000 fans at Compuware Arena, 14900 Beck Road, in Plymouth, according to the Detroit Free Press, and began a second session at noon Monday. The team returns to Plymouth at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, and will hold its Red vs. White game later that evening, beginning at 6 p.m. The Red vs. White contest also will be carried live by both Fox Sports Detroit, with Ken Daniels, Mickey Redmond and Larry Murphy calling the shots, and on 1270 AM with Ken Kal and Paul Woods. With the National Hockey League lockout officially over, the Detroit Red Wings have announced their 2013 schedule. The Wings will play 48 games in 99 days as Detroit looks to extend its 21-season playoff streak, the longest current streak in professional sports. The Michigan High School Athletic Association is hosting its second annual Battle of the Fans and is ready to highlight the best student cheering sections across Michigan. To enter, follow these rules: The MHSAA Student Advisory Council will choose five finalists. MHSAA officials will visit each school on a Friday game night to see the fan section in person.
