Shaarey Zedek Rabbi Emeritus Irwin Groner Dies

The 81-year-old Southfield resident was elected 'Rabbi of the congregation for life' in 1978.

Rabbi Irwin Groner, who served Congregation Shaarey Zedek and metropolitan Detroit for more than 50 years, died Dec. 30. He was 81.  The Detroit News reports Rabbi Groner died at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, due to complications from Parkinson's disease.  A funeral service will be held Jan. 1, 2 p.m., at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 27375 Bell Road, Southfield, with Rabbis Joseph Krakoff, Aaron Starr, Alan Lucas and Cantor Meir Finkelstein officiating.  According to an obituary published by Ira Kaufman Funeral Home, Rabbi Groner first came to Shaarey Zedek in Detroit in 1959 as an assistant rabbi and was named senior rabbi in 1967. Legendary Detroit Weatherman Sonny Eliot Dies in Farmington Hills Home

TV pioneer Eliot, 91, passed away peacefully at home in Farmington Hills.

Detroit's beloved weatherman, Sonny Eliot, passed away in his Farmington Hills home Friday. He was 91. The Dorfman Chapel in Farmington Hills is handling funeral arrangements, which are pending. Known for his sunny disposition and his rapid-fire quips, Eliot had a 60-year career in Detroit broadcasting and was a pioneering TV personality. Eliot joined the staff of WWJ-TV (now WDIV) after World War II and stayed there for 35 years. He was a weatherman, host of the annual Thanksgiving Day parade broadcast and hosted an "At the Zoo" series. After TV, he kept the fun going on WWJ radio (950 AM). He was born Marvin Schlossberg on Dec. 5, 1920, in Detroit. Eliot was also a veteran of World War II, according the The Michigan Compainion book, and …

Remembering Ray Bradbury: Books Available at Local Libraries

The award-winning science fiction-fantasy author has died at the age of 91.

The death of science fiction-fantasy writer Ray Bradbury this week is sure to renew interest in his work, so we checked with local libraries to find out what they have on hand. Bradbury died Tuesday night in California at the age of 91, his daughter Alexandra Bradbury told the Associated Press. No additional details were available. Bradbury "transformed his childhood dreams and Cold War fears into telepathic Martians, lovesick sea monsters, and, in uncanny detail, the high-tech, book-burning future of Fahrenheit 451,” the AP said. Among his many notable honors, Bradbury received a special Pulitzer Prize citation "for his distinguished, prolific and deeply influential career as an unmatched author of science fiction and fantasy" in 2007. …

Former Berkley Mayor George Kuhn Dies at 87

Local leaders recall Kuhn as a 'gentleman' and 'true public servant.'

George Kuhn, the former mayor of Berkley, died Monday in Highland Ranch, CO, at the age of 87.  Kuhn was a Detroit native who was elected mayor of Berkley in 1960 and served as a local leader until his retirement in 2000. Current Berkley Mayor Phil O’Dwyer commented on the loss, recognizing Kuhn for his service to the area. "The City Council and people of Berkley are saddened at the passing of former Mayor George Kuhn,” O’Dwyer said. “He was a distinguished public servant for decades and we extend our condolences to his family." Kuhn was a graduate of Central Michigan University, captain in the Navy during the Korean War and retired Ford Motor Co. executive. McCourt's Music Family Member was Rock Star to Loved Ones

Bloomfield Hills native Michael Patrick McCourt, 48, died Tuesday.

Not every kid gets to say their dad was a rock star. But for Caelan, Ciaran and Aidan that’s how they saw their dad who brought love and music into their lives. Michael Patrick McCourt of Pleasant Ridge died Tuesday, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
