Berkley School District families have been warned to be on alert after a female student reported that a man approached her outside Anderson Middle School this week. BSD Superintendent Dennis McDavid sent the following e-mail alert Friday afternoon. Dear Parents/Guardians: Today we were notified that yesterday morning while walking to school an Anderson Middle School student was approached by an adult male driving a silver Jeep Liberty. The student reported that the driver asked if she wanted a ride. The student immediately ran to a friend's house. A police report was made with Berkley Public Safety. The girls and boys squads will compete Saturday in the 2013 Rugby Michigan High School State Championships in Holland, MI.
The Berkley High School girls and boys rugby teams will play for state championship titles Saturday, May 25, in Holland, MI. The Division 3 boys team will play Rockford at noon and the Division 1 girls team will play Traverse City at 1:30 p.m. during the 2013 Rugby Michigan High School State Championships. "I'm pretty optimistic overall," said Larry Vertel, who coaches the boys squad. "We pretty much have outscored our opponents." For example, he said, during two quarter-final and semi-final games last week against West Ottawa and the Downriver consolidated team, Berkley scored 118 points versus their opponents' three points. Meet Lexi, our Pet of the Week. Lexi is a young (less than a year old) long-haired female cat currently available for adoption with Almost Home Animal Rescue League in Southfield. She "makes quite an impression on everyone she meets," according to Almost Home. "She is the stealth cat of Almost Home and will just magically appear, at your feet, under your hand or on your lap after she scopes out the situation and realizes all is OK," the rescue writes. The incidents happened Thursday on Lincoln and Ludlow, according to the Public Safety Department.
The Huntington Woods Public Safety Department is investigating reports of two home break-ins that occurred Thursday. No one was injured, but items were taken in both incidents, Huntington Woods Public Safety Deputy Chief Nicholas Armold said Friday. In the first incident, a resident returned home to discover his home in the 8300 block of Lincoln had been broken into and reported it just after 3 p.m., Armold said. "His house was pretty well ransacked," Armold said. "There was a broken window but we're not sure of the point of entry just yet." While officers were responding at the scene on Lincoln, a second call came in at 3:17 p.m. to report another break-in in the 10500 block of Ludlow, Armold said. Huntington Woods native and Berkley High School graduate Nate Fridson will perform this weekend at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak. The New York-based comedian kicked off his headline gig Thursday, along with emcee Cory Latarski and featured act Amaru, and will do more shows Friday and Saturday. “I talk about my life, some observational things, some personal, and things I’ve noticed and things that have happened to me,” Fridson told The Woodward Talk. “I play on my interest in music and sports and touch on relationships, as well as people in my generation and what it is like to have friends that aren’t comics."
