What's Open, Closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day federal holiday Monday is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of one of our nation's greatest civil right leaders. As such, many state and local offices, banks and credit unions, schools and libraries will be closed.

King, who urged nonviolent resistance as a means to protest racial and other human rights injustices, was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, TN, and would have turned 83 on Sunday.

The 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner delivered an early version of his I Have a Dream speech during a 1963 rally in Detroit.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," he said later that year during his famous speech in Washington, DC.

Several communities are marking the holiday with events, assemblies and peace marches.

For those who prefer a more creative way to meditate on the civil rights leader's life, Painting with a Twist in Ferndale will offer a special art session Monday.
