Annual event attracts people from throughout the state who stick around afterward to enjoy the zoo.

Nearly 2,500 runners and walkers made their way to the Detroit Zoo on Sunday morning for the annual Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo Run/Walk.

The event, in its 15th year, attracts participants from all over the state to take part in the 5K, 10K and 1.5 mile Fun Walk races. Afterward,  finishers are treated to lunch and are free to walk around the zoo.

“It’s a family oriented event; there are nice people here and it’s just a great area,” said Michelle Balanowski of Chesaning, MI.

“I like supporting the and I’m a runner so I thought it would be a good day to come out and do that,” said Waterford resident Camellia Edson. “It’s just a fun activity, you get access to the zoo afterward to go in and see the animals.”

Proceeds from Run Wild benefit the zoo’s Ruth Roby Glancy Animal Health Complex and veterinary care.
