Snag Books for a Buck, or Less, During Friends of the Library Sale

The volunteer group's biggest fundraiser of the year will be held Friday through Sunday at the Berkley Public Library.

The Friends of the Library will hold its biggest fundraiser of the year this weekend, kicking off Friday and running through Sunday, during the Fall Book Sale at the .

Shoppers can pick up children's books for $1 and adult books for $2 on Friday, with prices half off on Saturday and bags of books available for $6 Sunday. Some DVDs, CDs and videotapes, as well as specially priced books, also will be available. Proceeds from the sale will be used to support library programs, equipment and collections.

"This year the library's book budget was cut 30 percent (on top of last year's 20 percent cut), and the Friends are raising money to help the library purchase more new books," Berkley Public Library Director Celia Morse wrote in an e-mail to Berkley Patch. "The Friends provide the majority of the funding for the teen and adult summer reading programs and help to support the children's programs.

"In recent years the Friends have purchased a laminator, computer projector, stained glass windows for the lobby and teen room, and have provided money to purchase children's audiobooks and music CDs, new adult books, and they have paid the full cost of the library's downloadable audio and ebooks," she added. "The Friends provide many extras the city cannot afford and make the library a much better place."

Why go: "The Friends have collected thousands of books and carefully sorted them out into categories," Morse said. "The sale contains only books in good condition – no textbooks, library discards, etc."
