Monday: Fourth of July Festivities

Here's your guide to Huntington Woods' parade, celebration and fireworks, plus a list of other displays throughout Metro Detroit.

The 40th annual Fourth of July parade takes place Monday in Huntington Woods, followed by activities for all ages throughout the day, culminating with fireworks over .

"It's really a cool piece of Americana," said latchkey director Lisa Anderson, who also serves as parade liaison.

This year, the parade will feature the Martin Luther King Jr. High School band, which performed in 2008 during pre-Olympic ceremonies in China; a Lawn Mower Drill team; two sets of horses; floats; and more.

"We try to get a lot of more original things," Anderson said.

, as well as winners Nathaniel Sachs and Alexis Rosenbaum will get to ride in the procession. Anderson added that past city award winners will be sporting red-white-and-blue rosettes during the parade and celebration Monday.

The parade and Fourth of July entertainment would not be possible without , which donated $3,000 toward the cause, Anderson said.

The following are hours and locations for each activity:

  • Old-fashioned bake-off: 9-10 a.m. . "It is incredible to see what people make," Anderson said. "The ages and the lines of people waiting to taste the stuff ... This is, I think, a throwback."
  • 40th annual July 4th parade: 10 a.m. Due to road construction, the parade will deviate from its usual route (see attached PDF). This year, the parade will begin at on Woodward Avenue, travel down Salem/Nadine, to Huntington, to Borgman, to Scotia, winding up at Scotia Park. The parade will go on rain or shine. Dogs are welcome.
  • Hot dog roast: 11 a.m. Scotia Park. Lunch includes hot dogs, chips and beverages. Ice cream sandwiches also will be available. Proceeds benefit the July 4th Celebration Fund.
  • Speeches and awards: Immediately following the parade at Scotia Park. Civic award recipients, as well as Fourth of July contest winners will be honored.
  • Old-fashioned games and races: 1 p.m. Scotia Park. The contests – for kids and grown-ups – will include relay races, a water balloon toss, an adult egg toss, a tug of war and more. "Adult men get very competitive," Anderson half-joked.
  • Concert in the Park: 7:30-9:30 p.m. Scotia Park. Groove to Motown and R&B tunes from The Sun Messengers, the official band of the Detroit Pistons.
  • Fireworks Raffle drawing: 8 p.m. Scotia Park.
  • Fireworks: Approximately 10:05 p.m. over Rackham Golf Course.

Fireworks roundup: The following is a list of other displays taking place today across Metro Detroit. All fireworks begin at dusk, which is generally shortly after 10 p.m. There is no admission fee unless otherwise stated.
