Huntington Woods Thanks Men's Club for Donation

Huntington Woods Men's Club President Rick Kagen recently delivered a big check to the city.

The Price Is Right-size voucher was made out for a significant sum: $60,000, which – along with approximately $20,000 from the city's sanitation fund – will be used to cover the cost of .

The donation represented a portion of the $80,000 that was raised during the 2011 Huntington Woods Men's Club Service Auction, Kagen said during the Nov. 22 City Commission meeting at .

"We're very lucky – as a city – to have such a dedicated group of gentlemen," said Mayor Ronald Gillham, who accepted the check.

Huntington Woods is the first of 12 Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority (SOCRRA) communities to entirely convert to single-stream recycling, which allows participants to skip the step of sorting. SOCRRA will use the data gathered in Huntington Woods to encourage the other cities to adopt single-stream recycling.

The other SOCRRA communities include Berkley, Beverly Hills, Birmingham, Clawson, Ferndale, Hazel Park, Lathrup Village, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak and Troy.

Claire Galed of the Huntington Woods Public Works Department said during the meeting that recycling has increased each week since the new bins were introduced.

Work also is under way toward the installation of solar panels at the , funding for which was raised during the 2010 Men's Club auction. Stay tuned to Berkley Patch for an update on the project!

"On behalf of the city, I think we all appreciate the amazing philanthropic efforts that group puts forward," City Commissioner Jules Olsman said of the Men's Club.
