Fireworks Raffle Goes Off With A Bang

Huntington Woods Men's Club, community members raise $12,500 to sustain the Fourth of July tradition.

Facing the possibility of a year without Fourth of July fireworks, the Huntington Woods Men's Club spearheaded a fundraising drive that saved the display and resulted in a $12,500 check that will be presented to the city.

In December, . He urged community members to take action if they wanted to save the display.

The Men's Club donated $5,000 toward the Fourth of July celebration and, after  , the service organization decided to replace its usual Fourth of July property tax raffle with a Fireworks Raffle.

“The community really wants the fireworks to continue since they purchased 1,162 raffle tickets which totaled $11,620," HWMC Fireworks Raffle committee co-chair Rob Hurley said.

Mr. Huntington Woods Corey Faulkner drew the raffle winners' names, below, Monday night during the Concert in the Park.

  • $2,000: Rick Kagen of Huntington Woods
  • $500: David Reed of Huntington Woods
  • $100: Charlie Marcuse of Birmingham

“All the winners were very pleased to receive the telephone call," Hurley said. "Charlie even said he’ll spend the money on candy for next year’s parade.”

In addition to the Fireworks Raffle, the Men's Club placed donation canisters at approximately 20 locations in Berkley, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak and Oak Park.

“While we’re still collecting and tabulating the canisters, we anticipate another $300 to $350 in donations,” Hurley said.

“This Fourth of July was a picture perfect day – and night – in the Woods," he said. "We’re thankful for everyone’s support and we hope to do better next year. Everybody’s still smiling.”
