Teen Council, Public Safety Department Come Out Winners in Huntington Woods Charity Game

The Huntington Woods Teen Council and Public Safety Department have earned year-long bragging rights, thanks to some awesome skills on the field.

Thursday evening, the Huntington Woods Teen Council teamed up with the to play in a charity softball game against the Huntington Woods Men’s Club. 

It was held in the fields behind the and proceeds from the game were raised to benefit the Jeff Braun Youth Sports Foundation, established in honor of a late Huntington Woods dad who loved sports.

The six-inning game was compiled of “regular” softball, kickball and teeball. Umpires were Lou Rubenstein, Scott Lustig and Ryan Katz.

Huntington Woods Parks and Recreation Program Coordinator Tracy Shanley said the competition was a blast and all in good fun.

“In the end, the Teen Council/Public Safety Team one by a single run!" she explained. 

Here’s a look at some of the highlights if you missed the live action:

  • Mayor Ron Gilham threw out the first pitch to Eric Braun (Jeff Braun’s son) to start the game.
  • During one inning, the Men’s Club pitched a donut to Officer Todd Tyler instead of a ball.
  • During two innings, spectators could donate money for the Teen Council/Public Safety team to receive extra outs and extra players in the field.
  • Local businesses and residents sponsored the innings to help pitch in.
  • Raffle prizes were available, adding to the excitement.
  • The game also had concessions like hot dogs, pizza, chips, water and pop.  Uncle Andy’s donated the pizza.
  • Newly elected Teen Council Coordinator Wendy Wismer sang the National Anthem before the game.
  • Parks and Recreation staff members Daniel “Mousakka” Monaco and Bill Gergosian ran the play by play for the game.
  • This was the third softball game fundraiser that the Teen Council and Public Safety have planned together.
  • A grand total of nearly $1,000 was raised this year for the Jeff Braun Youth Sports Foundation.
