Photos: Huntington Woods Fireworks Show Goes On

Die-hard fireworks fans navigated the steamy, darkened streets of Huntington Woods with flashlights Wednesday night as they made their way to watch the annual display over after a day of sweltering heat, .

A severe thunderstorm whipped through Huntington Woods earlier Wednesday evening, battering the area with powerful winds and hail and knocking out power to 2,151 utility customers in the city, according to DTE's outage map.

Evening festivities at , including a concert by the Sun Messengers and the Men's Club's fireworks raffle drawing, were canceled due to the weather.

But the fireworks went on as scheduled, albeit with a smaller crowd than usual.

Ludlow, which would normally be packed with spectators long before the show began, was relatively quiet Wednesday night. Half the street was without power, putting a damper on the usual party scene. A modest crowd gathered at the corner of Ludlow and Meadowcrest to watch the fireworks shortly before the show began.

Jane Stewart, whose house was one of those without power, moved a popcorn maker and Sno-Kone machine her family had intended to use to help raise funds for her daughter's school trip to Costa Rica down the street to a neighbor's house.

Instead of selling the treats for $1, Stewart was giving them away.

"It's Fourth of July," she said. "It's lemonade out of lemons."

To her customers, she said: "Everything's free because of the rain. We're having a rain sale."

The Men's Club has rescheduled the fireworks raffle drawing, which will be held Tuesday during the Concert in the Park at Scotia Park. Tickets can be turned in to Rob Hurley at 10514 Borgman or Rob Weed at 10714 Lincoln up until 6 p.m. Tuesday.
