Air Quality Alert Issued for Southeast Michigan

Residents are encouraged to use mass transit if possible and to combine errands into a single trip Tuesday.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has declared Tuesday as an Air Quality Action Day throughout Southeast Michigan due to prolonged heat.

Residents are encouraged to take a number of steps, including:

  • Defer using gas-powered engines.
  • Walk, bike, carpool or use mass transit if possible.
  • Link errands into one trip.
  • Conserve energy.
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle.

Rain is possible during the next couple days, but the chances are slim, according to the alert.

"The highlight of the weather conditions for this week will be the hot temperatures sticking around right through the 4th of July holiday," the alert says. "Precipitation chances are not that high and plenty of sunshine and hot temperatures will continue in most areas."
