5 Things to Explore at the Detroit Zoo This Week

With the first day of school just around the corner, how will you spend the last few weeks of summer vacation? 

If you are looking for something to do, how about a trip to the Detroit Zoo? Situated on 125 acres right here in our own backyard, did you know the zoo is home to more than 3,300 animals of 280 species?

With summer vacation winding down, Patch explores one of Michigan's most beloved family attractions. 

We begin with a list of five immersive habitats at the Detroit Zoo.

1. Prairie Dog Habitat

The black-tailed prairie dog habitat is one of the most popular immersive experiences at the Detroit Zoo. Kids can get nose-to-nose with the inhabitants inside viewing bubbles placed within the habitat.

2. Giraffe Encounter

An elevated viewing platform overlooking the giraffe habitat brings guests to eye level with the Zoo’s tallest creatures. Visitors can purchase a ticket redeemable for a supervised opportunity to feed the giraffes.

3. Australian Outback Adventure

Get face-to-face with the Zoo’s mob of red kangaroos and wallabies on a winding walkabout path right through the animals’ habitat.

4. Butterfly Garden

Located inside the Zoo’s Wildlife Interpretive Gallery, this immersive habitat includes hundreds of free-flying butterflies representing 70 species.

5. Arctic Ring of Life

North America’s largest and most unique polar bear habitat features the 70-foot-long Frederick and Barbara Erb Polar Passage, giving visitors underwater views of swimming polar bears and seals.
